Rem 870 (2&3/4 inch) Best Barrel For Turkey
« on: February 23, 2003, 01:34:57 PM »
I got a Turkey Permit In Maine, but i got a problem too. I only have
12guage 870 in 2 3/4  improved cylinder ,i have been told this isnt the ideal barrel for turkey. What would be a better choice if i were to buy a new barrel for this gun. Any comments ?

Fatcatbuster,The trick is to call the bird up close and your impcylinder will do as good as any if close enough.May I suggest you pattern your gun and see what shot size it likes best at say 30yds. You can kill or miss with what you have as good as what you think you might need. I thought the whole idea was to call the bird in.If it is not then get your rifle out! I hunt with a 20ga.and for years I thought no 5's were what was best.Killed a lots of birds with that load. Then one day I decided to patter my gun and found that it preferred no 4's a whole lots better.Try patterning your gun and you might just be surprised! Good luck,I am CAL.....

Thanks Guys, it was about what i expected with the Full Choke being better suited for Turkey. I will pattern the improved before buying another barrel tho. All the big toms ive seen recently are under bird feeders . If you could only have two turkey calls to use what would you use. Ive got a gobble call and a box yelper call now. Cant wait!!!!

:-D You could look at getting a barrel with choke tubes. Then you have a choice of chokes. They have a full and a turkey choke tubes that I have for my 870.
