Optimum barrel length for .22 Hornet...
« on: August 07, 2005, 07:54:37 AM »
I have 40 yr old Savage 219L (much like the NEF) in .22 Hornet caliber.
It has a 26" barrel which I am considering shortening to 22"..
Where can I find out what the shortest length is that I can cut my barrel to and still retain full power ?

I don't know the answer to your question; nor do I know where you could find out for sure.  But an educated rough guess would be in the 20 to 21" range.  I say this because the .22 WMR is said to begin losing velocity at around 18.5" of barrel length, and the hornet has a smidge & a half more powder.  If it were me, I'd cut it to 21", maybe 22".  You might just get more velocity than from the 26".

Thanks FF...lots of viewers but few answers. Perhaps  not having a clear answer, they preferredto pass.
Your train of thought seems logical...I may well go that way.
