When mounting a scope base, what Loctite is best to use, blue or purple?

The blue if you ever want to take it apart  :)

the red was designed for larger threaded bolts

Use purple if you can get it, if you can I would like to ask you to buy me a tube and send it to me, I will happily pay you for your costs!!!  The purple is made for small diameter threaded fasteners (scope screws, etc) which you want to remove at a later time but you do not want to loosen by vibration during use. The blue is for the same application for larger (1/4"+) threaded fasteners but is what is more available so most use it and it works OK but is not the proper application (read the directions on the cardboard and plastic holder the tibes of locktite come in). The red is for more permanant fastening for larger diameter bolts  such as automotive headbolts under high heat and pressure.
Let me know if you can get purple and I would appreciate getting a tube from you. Of course you could use clear nail polish or blue locktite if you had to. Unable to get purple I use clear nail polish and it works very well. Good Luck....<><.... :grin:

I had heard someone say use the blue, but I went in the store today to try to find some and they didn't have blue so I read the back of a pack of red and it said to use the purple for the smaller screws. Of course they didn't have purple either. If I can find some I will gladly get you a pack. Thanks for the info.

I use clear finger nail polish ...

But if color is an issue, you could use red or blue finger nail polish I guess    :-D

I use blue loctite and after lapping the scope rail to the barrel, bed the rail in loctite by using a generous amount in and around the mount holes. Just be sure to wipe off the excess, it makes it really hard to open the action if it's loctited shut!!! :oops:

I don't use any. And I have never had any type of problem. Many years ago I had a gunsmith mount a scope for me and he explained that the only way to remove the screw with locktite was with extreme heat. Kind of like the heat you generate when you shoot your rifle. Just an opinion.        Tvc15

You don't wanna use the red loctite. Someone used it on the scope base on my 44 mag barrel. It took me a good 45min. to an hour to get that thing off. It had the weaver base with the flat head screws. I stripped 2 of the screws and broke 3 bits trying to get them out.

You'll get your turn in the barrel sooner or later!! Was at the range today, a fella down the line was having trouble with his weaver base screws shooting loose, lent him my loctite to stop the problem. Any gunsmith will recommend loctite on bases, but probably not ring screws, it's just good common sense to do what you can to provide a stable platform for your sights.
