Im trying to figure out what my next purchase should be. I will be mainly hunting whitetail out to about 200 yrds, maybe bear, and will try to get a PA Elk tag this year. I have read some articles about the 270 win being an all around cartridge. I want a round that will fly fast, hit hard and be effective on the game mentioned above. I would also like to stay away from larger than 30 cal. What are your opinions on the 270 Win from a 15" tube? Also considering the 243 Win and 308 Win.

I have been shooting a 270 Encore 15" for several years. It is an absolute blast to shoot (literally) and it hits HARD. It is also extremely accuarate at distance. (250+ yards) It is one barrel I wouldn't part with. Russ

Check into the 7mm-08, lots of data around for the shorter pistol tubes, hits hard and less flash and bang than some of the longer cartridges. Round was tops in knocking down steel targets for a long time.

My first choice would be the 7mm 08, second would be the 257 Roberts and third would be the 243 Winchester. The muzzle blast will be much less with a short action cartridge and within handgun range, they all would be fine performers.

I would say one of the best all around calibers is the 30-06.I have one a 15" tube with no-muzzle brake and it is not that bad on muzzle blast or recoil.The '06 has it all I think you would be a happy camper if you get one I know I am.

I think some of you guys missed the Elk part. If you are hunting Elk, the 308 or 30-06 is the only choice. Forget about the 7mm-08 or the 270 Win in a pistol for Elk. I use an 7mm-08, perfect for deer, not Elk. The 270 in a 15 barrel is also minimal, and really loses velocity in a short barrel.

Of course with well placed head and neck shots anything would work. I assume you want a good hunting round though.

:shock: hehehe, very funny. 7-08 not big enuff for elk. :lol: and 270 minimal

never hunted an elk, used the 270(rifle form) all my deer hunting life for deer. i now use the 7-08 encore pistol for deer. i would not hesitate to go after elk with the 08. i would use an appropriate, well made bullet, and be eatin elk steaks.

they are a big tough animal, and would require extra preparation as far as load development, etc, on my part.

I have used a 270 Winchester rifle on Elk, it works with well placed shots. I just think there are far better choices in a handgun. If you can afford an Elk hunt, you cannot afford a proper barrel, in a proper caliber. :wink:
