a couple companies make the rimfire barrel but its VERY costly, like over $300 to make one.

the g2 barrels dont fit encores and vice versa.

The 270 or 308 will put you into an Encore because the G2/Contender won't take the high pressure rounds. 22RF is easier to use in a G2/Contender. Just flip the switch and you can go from centerfire to rimfire.  You might check prices, but I would think that by the time you pick up a barrel and adaptor for the encore, you can probably pick up a used G2/Contender with a 22 barrel.

The best way to do as you want is to get a Contender with

22 lr barrel then add a SSK custom barrel in 309 JDJ a wildcat that will compare with a 308.  Or just get a 30-30 contender carbine barrel and use spitzer bullets. The 7-30 waters is also an excellent cartrifge for the contender.
JMHO I prefer the old style Contenders to either the new G-2 or the Encore.

Yes, however not all G2 fit G1 - muzzleloader for example.

I believe that to be true for the moment but it sets a precedent. I don't care for the idea of my G1 Contenders becoming "obselete" if TC decides to do more of that.

Maybe, but with all the barrels already out there, and all the folks willing to make aftermarket stuff for Contenders I don't think there is much chance of that.  Had obsolecence been the plan why make any barrels interchange?

Keith L is 100% correct - I just wanted a muzzleloader barrel for my G1 Contender and probably am expressing sour grapes because they make it for the G2 only

If I could I would still do it all over again in the same way: Contender over Encore. Why? Well, I just do not need more power or range than the Contender has to offer, I like the more compact size of the Contender and I really like my 22 rimfire barrel as well. Like jlevach posted I slightly prefer the G1 frame for its superb trigger and the availability of Pachmayr grips but the G2 is no slouch.

I wouldn't hesitate to get an Encore if I really needed more power and range but you have to be honest with yourself on that account because you will be lugging around considerably more bulk if you go that way. Remember: the Contender is no pocket pistol itself...

And I agree with Ed: I like the size and versitility of Contenders and would get an Encore in a heartbeat if I needed the added power.  I have two G-2s and an original.  The Original has a Pachmayr grip and I keep it to use with my heavy recoiling barrels.  My G-2s have triggers at least as good as the original I have so I guess I am lucky.  And I have more fun with my rimfire barrels than I have any right to.
