WEAVER SCOPE BASE FOR A BIG GUN?
« on: August 10, 2005, 12:47:34 AM »
i have a weaver base on my 44mag barrel already and i think its alright for that but once this barrel gets rechambered to 445SM or to 444 marlin i may need something better.im going to use 3 rings with this setup but the base is in question.will it hold up to the added recoil?

The only bases I use are Weaver for all of my barrels. 22 Hornet to 375JDJ. Never had a problem. However, I do use the 6 hole bases and not the 4.

I use the 3 ring set up with the JDJ and have had no problems with slippage.

The Weaver bases should be fine if you go with the 6-hole type.

I have never had to use a 3 ring set up on any hand gun, not even on my 500MAG. I did however get one on my Freedom Arms 454 Casull, when I bought the gun it was already on it.  :D

when you have the barrel re chambered you can send the base with it any good gunsmith should be able to drill and tap the barrel and mount to make it into a 6 hole base.

6-screw base conversion

When you send it all off be sure to specify SSK, Virgin Valley, or Bullberry spacing on the new screw holes. This will give you more freedom if you need to switch to a steel base later. I have had a red-dot sight mutilate a Weaver base, now I'm using one Bullberry 6-screw steel base and three VV 6-screw SS bases. Everything smaller than 30-30 Improved still uses the Weaver 4-screw base.
Having a "Pachmayer Decelerator Gripper" grip will calm down the re-coil, it makes a big difference when shooting a caliber that has some punch, I highly recommend it.

i should of told you the whole story about this 44mag to 445sm rechamber,i plan on rechambering the barrel my self.i plan on getting the reamer and doing the job at home.i did a 357mag to 357max barrel myself and it turned out great.the accuracy from my 12inch TC 357 barrel is unreal.this G2 i have will outshoot alot of rifles off a bench.the 44mag to 445sm rechamber is a no brainer to do and can be done by hand with a T handle and a reamer.in fact if some of you have a 44mag barrel that you want rechambered i have a reamer deal going on down on the nef handi rifle forum here at graybeard outdoors.you can get on the list for the reamer and rechamber your own barrel for $15.00 pluss shipping to the next guy.CHECK IT OUT

i will talk to my smith about adding another two holes and screws to the weaver base but i think i will try it out first just to see how it holds up

thanks for all the input
