James Bond's pistol ?
« on: August 10, 2005, 11:10:38 AM »
I've been watching some old Bond films fron the 60"s and have forgotten what make, model and caliber pistol he liked and why. Is it the same as in Flemming's books  and did it change after Shawn Connory stop making the films.

Hello...

No, it was a Walther PPK in 7.65mm, otherwise known in the US as the .32 ACP.

I saw the part of the movie "Dr. No" just last night.  They made him trade in his Beretta for the Walther.  They overestimated the stopping power of the 7.65mm cartridge, IMO.  They, the overseers of J.B., stated that "all the CIA agents" were carrying the Walther.

Cheers,
Gary

In the first James Bond movie, Dr. No, "M" issued 007 the new Walther PPK in 7.65mm by "Q" who said;
Quote
"Walther PPK. 7.65 ml., with a delivery like a brick
through a plate glass window. Takes a Brausch silencer
with very little reduction in muzzle velocity.
The American CIA swear by them."

I know in the later James Bond movies they changed the handgun but I am sure what they used.  Lawdog

The Walther was considered a grandiose upgrade to heavy artillery because it was replacing his faithful Beretta 6.35mm, ie; .25 ACP.

Now what did he carry in the Ian Flemming books?  I no longer have the John Gardner collection of Bond books so I can't look up what Gardner had him carry. any ideas?  I would bet a 9mm

Thanks,
Doug

My Hiddy is a 1939 Chromed PP 32 and with todays truncated bullets vs the ball it is really a stopper, one time in the thigh it was fired at a human and it did it now.

It started out as a Beretta 25acp in both the movies and the books, but then went to the Walter PPK in 32 acp.  Also, in one of his books, Fleming spoke to the use a of Colt (either Agent or Dective Special) in 38 Spl.  Mikey.

In the original book, Dr. No, James Bond was issued two handguns - the Walther PPK in 7.65mm and a Smith & Wesson .38.  He was told to try them out and give his opinion on each.  007 gave it to Quarrel(the fisherman) to use against the “fire breathing Dragon”.  Lawdog

Mikey and Blackhawk44 are are correct. In the Fleming novels, Bond favored a Beretta .25 but was later convinced to upgrade to the Walther in 7.62 (.32 ACP) because the .25 nearly let him down in a tight spot. I also recall a short story in which he had a long-barrelled .45 Colt revolver stowed beneath his dashboard. Whether it was a moon-clipped ACP or a .45 LC, I'm not sure.

But I thought this was a handgun hunting forum. What are we hunting? SMERSH operatives?

Blunderbuss - that long barrelled revolver he had hidden beneath his dashboard was a Ruger Blackhawk in 44 Magnum.  Mikey.

Sounds like we're hunting SPECTOR.
