Does anyone else's Bearcat shoot to the right?
« on: August 10, 2005, 11:37:15 AM »
I just got a ruger bearcat (blued) and it shoots about 1-1.25 inches to the right at 10 yards.  My brother has a stainless bearcat and it shoots about the same.  Is this common with the rugers?

Not that it's much of a problem to hold off an inch, just would rather that it shot to point of aim.

Since it's fixed sights, I don't guess there's any way to change point of aim, is there?

Thanks.

Brad

I have a Single Six that I got about a month or so ago and it shoots about the same distance left at that distance with the .22 lr cylinder. The .22 magnum is a lot closer to point of aim. Mine is also fixed sights.[/u]

My Bearcat shoots a little left with everything except Rem H.P.'s.  So try some different ammo before you resign to the fact that it doesn't shoot where you look.  Ruger will correct it if you send it back with an explanation.  I've always just turned the barrel a little.  If you look at the front sight you will probably see that it is not 100% straight.  You can (or your gunsmith) turn the barrel a little to bring sight and impact together.  I've done it to several fixed sighted guns.  44 Man

I think the main thing is to get a lot of different 22rf loadings and very carefully try them.  I know it is a long tedious process, although I enjoy it.  Without looking I probably have at least 2 dozen boxes of different loads.  My very old Bearcat shoots 60 gr. Aquilla subsonics to point of aim at 15 yds.  That's all I shoot in it, when I discovered that I quit testing.  Good luck.

As someone previous said, it's probably a barrel rotation problem.  I had an adj. sight SS that did that, 4 inches to the right.  You could look down the barrel and hardly see the front sight.   :)   Sent it to Ruger and got it back 6 days later dead on.   :-)

I was considering a bearcat purchase, but was somewhat concerned about the fixed sights not shooting to point of aim.
Well, my grandfather recently passed away, and to make a long story shorter, he had one that is now mine.
Its an older one, with the brass trigger guard, no transfer bar. It has the original box and paperwork that is dated 3-6-67. It has some holster wear but is a great shooter with an outstanding trigger. It shoots dead on at 25 yards with everything ive put through it so far. I dont know what its worth, I wouldnt sell it anyway cause its all I have left from my grandfather. I went and looked at a new one and was really disapointed in the action, it just doesnt even compare.
I guess the point of my post is that it seems the quality has certainly gone down hill over the years. I love Ruger single actions, and have several, but I dont know why they leave the factory with so much work still left to do, like trigger jobs, barrel turning, base pins needing upgraded, front sights the wrong size, etc.
