First handi-rifle
« on: August 10, 2005, 03:56:39 PM »
Well I bought my first handi-rifle today.  I needed a good hunting setup mostly for deer hunting.  I had decided that if I got a .308 for deer, I could send it in for a .223 barrel also.  I shoot mostly military type stuff so I use a lot of 223 and 308 so this made sense to me.  I also figured with 223 and 308 I could hunt must anything around.
Well my plan didn’t really work out.  I couldn’t find a 308 for a good price so I started to look at the Rossi single shot.  I went to a shop today to handle a Rossi,  and  the guy literally pulls this thing out from under a bunch of crap.    It was a big homemade wooden case.  Inside it was a nice handi-rifle in .270 with a .243 and a .50 muzzel loader barrel.  Both barrels have Millet rings and the factory bases.  The 243 barrel has a clean Simons Aetec 3-10 scope.  I never really liked the Simons stuff but I think this thing might be OK, it looks really clear and sharp.  I did want the 223 and 308, but really I think 243 and 270 might work out just as well or better.  Well I walked out paying $350 no tax.  I think for the rifle, three barrels and the scope it was a good price.  What do you think?

What I bought after i cut the box shorter

i cut the box down to hold one rifle and ammo as i would go to hunt.

I added some Burris rings

all barrels have matching numbers

I agree. The .243 will handle varmits and deer and the .270 will handle elk. Congrats, and welcome to Handiholicness. :-D  :D
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

Same here. You will find the Simmons Aetec scopes to be a great deal, and extremely clear for the small amount you pay for them. I have heard some die-hard Leupold guys give the Aetec props for it's clarity and wide field of view. Nice find. And if your receiver is new enough you can send it back to get fitted for a 223 or 308 barrel if you want. Let us know how they shoot..

Hmmm, the color cased frame looks suspicious, as far as I know, it was only offered on the BC/Target and the Pardner.

Anyone know what frame was on the Shikari??

What's the second letter of the frame serial number??

Thanks,

Tim

rc51;

Man, what a nice set up.
You make it look like one of those $2000-$3000 guns with the set up you got there.
You got some beauties!
Welcome aboard.

I was a little concerned about the case colored frame myself.  But the 270 barrel is the one with the stamped last three digits of the serial number, and the other two have it engraved in it.  The serial number is NS213xxx.  If you can shed some light on the frame I would love it.  I figured since it came with the 270 barrel as best I could tell it should handle other rile barrels.  Also I thought the second letter had to be higher than N in order to have new barrels added.

N designates it as a NEF and the S shows it was built in 2002. I am assuming the rifle was maybe a special order that NEF built with the case coloring since it is used on the Buffalo Classic and Target models which are SB2 heat treated frames. The Shikari model I mentioned was an older H&R model which was available in 45-70. Maybe one of the more seasoned Handi-holics can provide more info on the case colored frame.

Anyway, it looks like you have made a real nice purchase there!!! :agree:

Now I just read a PM from another board from 4 days ago, that I just opened.  A guy has a Handi with a 223, 30-30, and a 410 barrel for sale.  Now I want them all!!!  The madness has already started, I told him I already got one….. But what do you want for yours?
