new 30-30
« on: August 10, 2005, 04:02:22 PM »
Saturday morning I will more than likely pick up a new H&R standard 30-30.  I had one of these in the early 70's, but a divorce took it from me. I had no problems with it and enjoyed using it. I know the company has been sold and the guns have changed a little. Are there any problems that are common with the 30-30.

The gun will be outfitted with a 4x scope. I have a problem seeing a set of open sights at this time of my life. It will be used on 2 or 3 deer a year and to teach the grand kid to shoot and hunt.

Welcome aboard, 8462!! Bout all I can tell you about the .30-30 is the NEF produced models will probably be drilled and tapped for a scope base, where the older models may not be, dunno....They shoot really well from all reports here....If you have a hankerin to shoot factory ammo, I would encourage you to try the new Federal Fusion 150gr ammo, it shoots real good in mine at just under 2400 fps. The Remingon 170gr also shoot well, but not quite as good in mine.

Good shooting to you  with the prospective new .30-30!!

I too had an old Topper 30/30 and parted ways with it. Picked up another one, then parted with that too :?:.. duh!

One thing about the new ones, they are noticably heavier than the older ones. The barrel was (in my opinion) a nicely slim contour on the older ones, the newer ones are less tapered, (almost bull) barrels. I also prefer the iron sights on the older ones ...though in truth I used a scope on my Topper, as I do on my current 30/30 so I don't 'spose it makes that much difference about the irons

I seem to recall my old Topper weighed about 6lbs with scope, and the one I have now weighs about 8lbs with the synthetic stock and a compact scope. (Weighed on a cheap bathroom scale so not a precision measurement.)

And to answer your question: nope there don't seem to be any problems with the new rifles.... unless you consider the potential of becoming a Handi-holic a problem!

Cheers
