How to Remove Bedding Compound Smudges??
« on: August 10, 2005, 04:04:09 PM »
I just picked up my 700 CDL from my gunsmith after having him glass bed the action.  When I got home, I noticed that there are a couple of gray smudges on the stock, which I assume to be bedding compound.  I have tried to wipe the smudges off with water, furniture polish wipes, etc with no luck.  Does anyone have any ideas?

I should've looked it over more carefully at the 'smiths, but I just didn't take the time.  The rifle hasn't even been scoped yet, so I want to make the first dings/blemishes on my own!!

Thanks for the help, guys.

If the CDL has the shiney remington plastic finish it may be that there isn't really any bedding on the stock.  If the stuff gets on the fingers and you touch  the finish the bedding compound melts the finish temporarily..  It leaves a 'smudge' on the shiney surface of the plastic finish.  This is experience talking!! or could you tell....  Rubbing compound, 600-1000 grit wet or dry paper(used wet) and a touch up with rub-on poly for the fix..  Regardless of what you find the finish will be damaged and will need touching up..just like an automobile paint job.

take it back to the gunsmith, and politely point it out to him so that he can correct his small mistake.

Muchos gracias for the help, guys.

I used OOOO steel wool and rubbed out the smudges.  Then I reapplied rub on poly as suggested, and will wait for it to dry to see how it looks.
I'll report back on it.  Thanks again!
