im going to get a leupold VX III 6.5-20X40mm long range scope with the side focus knob. i was wondering which recticle i should get it in. i will be going on a prairie dog hunt with the scope and rifle for a couple of days but after that mainly deer hunting and long range (300-400 yards) targets. the recticle choices for the scope are-wide duplex, varmint hunters, fine duplex, and leupold dot. any suggestions appreciated!!

I like the fine duplex, but not the heavy duplex. Great for all hunting and target shooting.  :D

Get the varmint hunter reticle. I've been toying with the idea of buying a Leupold just to get that and the side focus capability. Haven't firmed up a decision but those two features are what's causing me to lean that way.

I second the varmint hunter reticle.  For small targets at long range, the duplex, IMHO is to big.  The thinner the reticle, the better.
