Corn for Bait?
« on: August 10, 2005, 07:33:02 PM »
Has anyone had success using feed corn for bear bait?  I work for a feed company and could get corn pretty cheap (well...Free).  This would be steam flaked corn and I could run it through the mill and add as much molases and/or tallow as I would like.  Do you think this would work?
If God did not intend for us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat???

yep you better sweeten it up.  they will eat some corn....as ive seen in old deer feeders id used....but i think itd only be good as a dry filler for ya....corn alone wont be as good an attractant as other stuf that has alot of sweet and rotten odor.

i use left over popcorn though as one of my dry bait ingredients....at work they toss the old popcorn out at the end of the day and they were surprised at how quickly they wound up filling a 33 gallon trash can with it.

Sounds like you could make an excellent bait by mixing the molasses & tallow with the corn (used as a binding agent). I've used molasses & suet blocks (rendered beef tallow & seeds formed into blocks for bird feeders) with great success in the past. Mix the ingredients into a paste-like consistency and apply to stumps, logs, tree trunks, inside of bait barrels, etc. at your bait site. This way the bear can't carry away the bait & eat it out of sight, forcing him to remain at the bait site, thus giving you more shooting opportunities.

I have tried sweet corn and had great results bringing in a plie of TIMBER WOLF.
We found scat on the trails and log roads that had corn in it even a couple miles away from the bait stations that had the sweet corn in them.
So I would skip the corn as bait for bear and stick to oats and molases.
