Thutty Thutty Project
« on: August 11, 2005, 04:31:07 AM »
All,

Here is my idea:

Send in my 280 receiver for a 30-30 barrel and get the youth wooden stocks while I'm at it.  Get the scope mount & hammer extension and top it with a fixed 4 power scope.  Also, get the trigger job while it is at the factory.

Add a mercury recoil reducer & a Limbsaver recoil pad.

I might think about slimming down the stock and give it a nice oil finish.

As you can tell this rifle will be for my little boy, and I am trying to make the recoil as reduced as possible.

I know many people would say just get a 243, but I am not a huge fan of really small diameter bullets.  I have seen many a whitetail fall to the 243, but I have seen some rough situations with less than perfect shots.

Anyway, please give me some Ideas on my project.  Am I better off just buying a whole new gun?  Will the recoil be tolerable for a 9 year old?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Nixsrs93

PS - I sure wish NEF made the 257 Roberts or the 7-30 Waters in the handi.

Sounds like a good plan to me. But before you go through with it, I would suggest going to some of your local pawn shops and dealers and look for a used one. If you look around hard enough you can probably find one for around $150 or so.
But then again a new one at Walmart is only about $200.

If the 7.62x39 is legal, I suspect it would be a good youth round within a restricted range and with good bullet selection.

I say you're on the right track.  That old thuty thuty can get the job done and you can hand load it down a lot.  If necessary use 130gr bullets since the low load velocity is lower, they are designed to open quicker.

I like the stock slimming idea.  I'll probably do somethin similar to Fred's job on mine too.  His came out very nice.  I don't think I could rechecker mine though.

I have an extra palet wood stock you can have for your boy. You will probably need to cut down a youth stock as well I did. Let me know where to send it & its yours

Look into the managed recoil ammo.    Cabelas carries the managed recoil ammo for a 30-30. They have it listed in the Master Catalog for fall 2005, page 547

Here's a link for an article about the maanged recoil. I have tried it in a 30-06 and it was very easy on the shoulder.

I think you are on the right track with the 30 - 30... My preference in helping youngsters is open sights. Let them migrate to scope, once they are comfortable. I still keep a 45/70 handi open sights for hunting. For me inside 100 yards open is all I need. As far as recoil is concerned my 9 year old daughter has no problem with my old 60's 94.. If she was adult sized, I'd let her shoot my 45/70. I think the recoil is no big deal.
I just think open sights are a better learning tool for kids.....

How many different 30-30 barrels are available from NEF?  Is there one with iron sites?  One without?

I think they all come with iron sights & drilled & tapped for a scope mount
Have to get a scope mount if you want one

All,

I can't seem to find the reduced recoil factory ammo for the 30-30.  Anyone know which of the ammunition makers are loading for this?

Thanks,
Nixsrs93

Here's an article on the Managed recoil loads...in a super light weight handi...they will be more...but...not much more...and I know this may sound completely crazy...but...I wouldn't go for a 30-30...I would opt for a full sized rifle barrel...in 30-06...or 270...take a-look at some interesting facts about it...http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_7_50/ai_n6038091

and you can read about it here...http://www.remington.com/pdfs/Spring2006_am.pdf

With the reductions in felt recoil...higher energy and flatter trajectory over the 30-30...it's kinda hard not to go that way...

Mac,

Very good point, now I am wondering if I should go with a 270 barrel!  With this Remington reduced load you could probably get the recoil of a 8lb 270 down to below the a standard 30-30 round.  What do you all think?

Great information, keep it coming.

I've talked with a-lot of guys who have all switched over from the 223 -243's here in Missouri for their kids lately...and all of them have said they shoot them just as well....and it's a real ego builder for the kids....knowing they are using a rifle just like Dad's.. ..I haven't put any of the 30-06 or the 270 loads thru mine yet...but I have reloaded to those levels...and they are quite mild as compared to full house loads....

Well I have done me some research, and I may be changing my mind.  See what you think:

Remington Managed Recoil 270 win.

115 grain bullet at 2700 fps

Effective kiling power out to 200 yards

And here is the good part, a 50% reduction in recoil!  So, in a 8 lb rifle the recoil energy of a standard 130 grain 270 load at 3140 fps is about 16.5 ft lbs.  The Managed Recoil load would be about 8.5 ft lbs of recoil energy.  This is less recoil than a 243, 30-30, or a 257 roberts.

So my Thutty Thutty project may turn into a 270 project for my little boy.  One more thing I like is, he can graduate to full power loads one day and never need a new rifle as he gets bigger.  We can simply put on a full sized stock and he is set for many many years.

I would still put on a youth stock, slim both stocks down, install a mercury recoil reducer, and a Limbsaver recoil pad.

Please shoot holes in my research.

Thanks,
Nixsrs93

Sounds good but if you could I would get both & if you leave your ammo home you can pick up win or rem 30-30 150s & shoot either one. Good back up(later on of course when your son canhandle the recoil) & 30-30's are just fun to shoot oh and you can have an open sight gun for him to learn on rater than just a scope. 270's I believe are scope only

Should have that stock in the mail later today If you go with the 270 build up a check piece with foam (water pipe insulation works well can bulid it to the height you need) helps stop the check slap as well. if ya get the 30-30 with open sights you have a stock  buy taking off the foam

Hope it works for ya
