Author Topic: Maybe getting into CAS (Read 572 times)

I will be watching a CAS event later this month to see what goes on, and to see if I would really be interested in it. I actually will be going to a couple of events to make sure I am interested. I probably will be considering that I already have a 1851 Colt C&B and will be buying a 1858 Remington very soon just because I like shooting black powder. I also have my grandfather's Stevens 311, but I have to take it into the shop to get the darn neon orange sight bead my father had put on replaced with a metal bead. By chance anyone here know how to do that so I don't have to take it into the shop? I guess pretty much the only gun I need to get now is a rifle. I have been thinking of a marlin or winchester, depending on which is available here near Frederick, MD and for a good price. I need something that looks similar to my Marlin 336C 30/30 because the wife said no new guns. I have enough guns that if I add one more, she won't notice, especially if two look similar. I hear that .38 bullets are pretty inexpensive. Which .38 bullets should I get that still falls within CAS regulations?

And finally, anybody here live in central Maryland? I sure would be interested in talking to you about the local CAS scene.

You are in a great area for CAS. The Northeast Regional is in Thurmont in September. There are also shoots in Damascus. Plus a bunch of clubs in PA.

You ought to be able to find either Marlins or Winchesters in your area. I shoot .45's so can't help with .38 ammo, but it is the most popular caliber so you will not have trouble getting info on it.

I am thinking about shooting in Damascus. Inorder to shoot in Thurmont, you either have to be a member of the sportsman's club or a member of SASS, to even watch. In Damascus, you can just show up to watch or shoot, don't have to be a member of the Issac Walton League nor SASS.

Keep us informed as to how it goes. Bet it just takes a couple till you're buying that new long gun.

I have Marlins in both .45 Colt and .38 Sp. The .38 is a shorter barrel and therefore lighter and easier to use. .45 has the 24" barrel and can get a bit hard to hold up for the 9th and 10th shots--but I'm getting old so that may not be a problem for you.

ps If you go with a Marlin, 3 rules: keep the screws tight, keep the screws tight and check to be sure the screws are tight.
