I was initially looking at a savage 12 or a T/C encore for a target/groundhog gun, but saw the ultra and handi rifles and their price grabbed my attention.  I was thinking about getting a ultra fluted with the choate stock in either .204 or 22-250.  Saw them at walmart for around $300.  I have heard some good things about the accuracy of these guns and was wondering if anyone here had some experience with them and how they liked them.  Thanks.

I have not seen anything on them but for that price i don't see how you could go wrong, A barrel will cost you that much for some of the single shot rifles. My advice would be buy one and tell us how it worked, Might be the starting of a new trend, Regards..........Joe..........

A friend of mine just bought that exact rile, except chambered in .223.

It's a killing machine.  He has made some outstanding shots on jacks out to 300 yards with that rifle.

It seems to have the common problem of stability off of the bench, but when you get it out in the field, it is very accurate.

I have a 223 H&R Fluted, liked it so well, pick up my 204 Fluted next Tuesday...........

Hi i didnt know they was making the rifles with flutted barrels. I seen one of them  in a 22 250 rifle. VM

I've got the 17HMR & .223 Ultra, and can definitely vouch for their accuracy. Under 1 MOA all day, and just plain fun to shoot. You can't beat them for the price. Check out the H&R forum; they'll tell you everything you want to know about them...  8)

I bought a handi in 17hmr just to get the barrel to rechamber to 17 remington for my H&R centerfire frame.  I have been using a 22-250 for yotes, but I think the 17 Rem will be just the ticket.  I will let you know how it shoots.  The load tables say 4,400fps with 20gr bullets.  Larry

I have two Ultra's...one in 223 and one in 25-06.

The 223 will put down 1/2" to 3/4" groups at 100y all day. Same goes for the 25-06 with both factory and reloads. Best group I can vouch for from either rifle was a 3/8" single hole at about 90 yards from the 25-06.

Both guns have made some impressive long range kills also. The 223 has taken g-hogs up to 225 yards and the 25-06 made two consecutive shots on crows at 280 and 290 yards. One shot kills for all of em..

If I had one complaint....it would be that they take a little while to reload if you are in a hurry...but thier singleshots so what can you expect :wink: With some practice...you can follow up a shot pretty nicely..

I found that out hunting jackrabbits while walking through the brush -- With a single-shot, you pretty much get the one shot, and if you miss they're gone in a hurry! But sitting at a high point and picking your shots over cross sticks is a whole 'nother story... 8)

Great rifles, but I wouldn't get one if I was mainly going to use it as a target rifle.  Because they are break actions you have to pick the gun up everytime to reload, then you have to find the target again.  Some don't mind this, but if you are shooting 10 shot groups a lot then it will start to annoy you.  Very accurate guns though.
