243 ammo suggestions
« on: August 11, 2005, 12:41:27 PM »
I need some subjections on what kind of factory loaded 243 ammo does well for whitetail deer.  I have never hunted with the 243 so I need some input on what weight and brand bullets work well for midsize game like deer. Please try to keep the suggestions to stuff that is reasonably priced.  The cheaper it is, the more I can practice.  Of course I don’t want crap cheap stuff,  just good ammo that works.  Right now I am going to stick with factory loads but I will try reloading when I accumulate some brass.

The Federal 95gr Fusion and 100gr Power Shoks shoot real good in my .243 Ultra, the Power Shok is an excellent bullet and I expect the Fusion to be, also. Both sell for less than $15 a box.

I am working on a handload but I started with the same ammo as Quicktodo and also liked it. 90-100 grain is a good choice for deer. when NEF accuracy tested my 243 the shot Remington corelokt. One of the Federal bullets mentioned (Power Shock I think) uses Speer Grand Slam bullets they are a premium bullet I just bought a box of each and paid 12.99 each. Dont get discouraged if it doesnt group very well on you. The 243 Handi seems to be exceptionally picky about shooting technique. I am a fair shot but I really struggle with good groups on my NEF 243. Try differant rests and other things before you give up.also try searching this site Quick and others have posted lots of great tips for frustrated 243 shooters. Good luck

PMP out of africa has a 100 grain SP load that sells for around 5.00 a box if anyone handles it in your area.  Should shoot like the Rem/Win cheap stuff, good for practice and brass for reloading.  Good luck on your search for inexpensive ammo.  Federal and Hornady have some nice loads for you, Federal seems to be more wide spread and a little less costly.  Have fun Dale.

Just go to Wal Mart and get Remington green box .243 in the 100 gr. bullet for about $11 a box.It is as good as anything else.Very accurate, dependable and hard hitting.

Sounds like 95-100gr for deer.  This is what i needed to know.  I dont need a target gun.  As long as I can get about 2 inch groups, I should be good.

I second the Federal Fusion ammo...also...for a slightly higher price...usually around $20-$22 a box...you can pick up some of the Federal Vital Shocks with the 100 grain Nosler Partition...they should work rather well also...

there is no mention of Fusion on the Federal Website - does anyone know of the official website for it?
