Strongest single-shot action?
« on: August 12, 2005, 05:22:09 PM »
I would love to know what the absolute strongest man-portable single-shot action is. To put this in perspective, this is for a future 4 bore rifle (single barrel), so it'll have to be quite strong.

Sources, links, anything would be great. I'm not liking the idea of a big rifle blowing up/killing me, etc. I could really, really do without that.

The BATFE might have a problem with your building a 4 bore. You could really do without THAT!

If it isn't exempt by the "sporting purposes" clause, I'll DD it before making it. No big deal, just a bit more time (6 months) in the scheme of things.

From everything I've read the strongest is the Ruger #1.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

As long as your going "full bore", as it were, why not a Dakota model 10 magnum action, they are machined, not cast.  Besides there is the issue of constancy, big gun, big bucks.

good luck with the project

Ruger #1 strong, but I don't know that the hole threaded for the barrel can hold a barrel bored to a 4 guage.

You don't need strong, you need big! A Ruger #1 can be modified to just barely work with a 600 NE, but that's the limit. You want a single or double barrelled break open. You won't find anything commercially available, but there are fellows who will build you one to order. Bring lots of money. On second thought, you might talk to McMillan rifles. Gale used to play with a bolt action using 20MM cases, and that would be about right as far as the case head size goes.

Hi.
I'm currently working with building 4-bores, but unfortunately they are the older muzzleloading types.
I'm not too sure about the break actions, or cartridge versions, which require LOTS more attention, especially in ammo.
I might move on to cartridges for mine later, but it's a jump I'm sure about at this point.
But I'd love to hear how this turns out.

Neither the Ruger No.1 or the Dakota 10 is large enough to handle the 4 bore, I don't think.  I believe Ed Hubel was working on a 4 bore a few years ago, you might contact him.  He used to be a member here, but am not sure if he still is.

Ed here--WE plan on making 4Bore in future.
Only actions big enough for them that is available
at reasonable price is The Borchardt falling block action made for BMG, and  you  would have to rebate rim a little. And I plan on  using a State Arms bmg action. It is shellholder action.very strong..
We have Badger Barrels getting set up to make 4 bore
rifled barrels, 350 bucks. We have process for
making brass from 20mm cases.Super strong, never
wear out.Ed Hubel
