Trouble Mounting Scope
« on: August 13, 2005, 05:32:39 PM »
:x I just received my new 3-9x40 Mueller yesterday and had a rude introduction to this scope. I used high rings and could hardly mount the @#@#@ thing to the rifle. I finally figured out that the only way to mount it was the curve at the bottom of the ocular bell. Where there is a curve at the power ring. It was the only way to get the hammer to contact the primer. I made the mistake of Simmons rings. After a few shots the @#@@#@ scope would slip and the hammer hit the bottom of my scope. I purchased a set of weaver high Rings and solved that problem. other than that I only wasted a box of ammo trying to site my 25-06 in.     Really a wonderful day spent at the range. Not bad groups if you're shooting a shotgun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D Anyone else had this much fun mounting a scope on your Handi? :D

A while back I had an issue with the hammer hitting the scope on my .223. And for a minute I was really puzzled because there was not much recoil to make the scope slip in the rings. Then I realized the hammer extension screw had come lose. Whew! That was close. I took it off and shot the rest  of the session witout it.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

Nope, I've mounted 6 Mueller scopes on several different rifles, not a problem using Burris Signature Zee rings in mediums most of the time, 4 that I own and 2 that were factory demos. I've used highs a couple times, but that can happen with any scope, not just Muellers. That's one of the complaints we have with NEF/H&R, they need to offer a different hammer configuration so the hammer interference isn't an issue.

I can't say that I've had that much "Fun" just mounting a scope...namely because I don't use cheap rings...I use either Burris Signatures...or Leupold QRW's...I really don't want to spoil anymore" fun" you can have...but I  do hope you followed the advice of several that have posted on the proper way of mounting your scope rail...you know...taking it off completely...cleaning out the mount holes down to bare metal in the bottoms and making sure the mounting srews are seated fully...with new loc-tite??? Since you have had sooooo much" fun " with those rings...you might have even more "fun" if the mounts get loose on you trying to figure out if your scope went bad on ya...but hey...sounds like your one of those kinds of guys that likes to have " fun"...sooo why worry about it...just shoot it as is and have some .................."fun"...

Mac

PS...of course this razzing was all in"Fun"...and I hope you did re-do the scope mount screws...cause it isn't any.." Fun"...to have that happen...

Mac, Funny, real Funny. That was as much fun as a root canal. Advice taken, I'll clean everthing tommorrow and loc-tite everting in place. First three shots 3/8 of an inch. Next 18 5 feet!!!!!!!  I took your comments to heart and hope you enjoy yourself as much as I did. Just kidding I had to laugh or else I'd ve broke down. I will never waste my money on cheap rings again. I did finally get smarter than the forend and took the rifle apart for cleaning.

 After the last two days I have had with this Handi I may just swear off. First the scope now the @**#@#*$#@ rifle. I did what you suggested Mac and removed my scope to clean and loc-Tite the bases. Front screww was not tite and would not snug up. Middle two came out ok. One tried to strip and the back screw did just that, strip. Now the rifle is on it's way to H&R to be repaired. So much for my Antelope gun. How long does warranty work take? PLUS THE SCREWS ARE DIFFERENT SIZES!!!!!!!!!!hOW HARD IS IT FOR THESE FOLKS TO USE A QUAILTY SCRRE?????????????? I haven't been this frustrated in 30 years. A month to go for my hunt and np rifle at the moment. I'll tell you if they take more than a couple of weeks I'm finished with this product. I have not got the @#$%%#%@@ thing sighted in yet. So far ths rifle leaves a lot to be desired. By the way the fun part of this progess has run out.

Jess,

I am very sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing. Would it  be possible to take it to a gun smith ...may save you some time and dose sound like it would not be to hard of a  fix.

:D Norse thanks for your reply but it's on it's way to H&R. I really like the rifle just one of those weekends. I can all ways use an A3-03 with 150's for my speed goat hunt. I know I was mad as a wet hen earlier today. It's not the end of the world it just seem like it a few hours ago. Like mac said at least my 1st 3 shots went into 3/8"

Your welcome Jess,

Yeah 3/8" groups! You bet it would put a smile on my face. I know what you mean about the screws though and I agree with you 100%.  I had a problem with my first handi. On the positive side H&R took care of it and were very decent to me. The rifle shoots dime size goups if I do my part and the wind isnt bad. Hang in there.

Jess, sorry to hear of your headache with the new Ultra....FWIW, H&R has been real quick on the turn around with warranty repairs and with their recent quick turn around on barrel fitting, I would expect it to be back real soon, depending mainly on shipping time.

:D  Gentlemen thank you for your responses. I enjoy this forum for the simple reason there are good people to correspond with. I'm becoming an old man quickly and it is nice to know good people still roam this wonderful country of of ours. I spent close to 24 years defending this nation and it gives me hope and faith that my grandchildren and children live in a land of decent God fearing neighbors.  Thanks guys for your kind words.

                                                    God Bless,

I know your ticked off...and your wanting to have a quick turn around on it...but I will give you a small piece of advice...when you call NEF in the morning.. and you should call them....be as nice as you possible can be when talking with the C/S department...there is no need what so ever for you to take out your frustrations on them...they weren't the ones who put your gun together...ask to speak with  Jennifer...tell her your a member here...and have heard nice things about her...and plead your case with her...tell her of your upcoming hunt and how you need a quick turn around on it...and that overall your pleased with the way the rifle shoots..3/8" groups....ect...ect...ect...if you start ranting and raving at them...your experiance with them won't go as smoothly...yes...you do have a right to be ticked off to no ends...but...they aren't the ones at fault...I've spoken to her on numerous occasions for varied reasons...and she has always gone out of her way to be helpful to me....namely because I'm always as nice as pie when I call her and take into account of how few people work in her department...so...let your consious be your own guide...

Mac I get mad and vent my frustrations but, I never scream and yell at folks who had nothing to do with a problem. You get much better results with honey than posion. Your point is well taken.  Jess :D

Me I get confused  :? when I read, "when I do my part of it" What part is that? The rifle either shoots or it doesn't.

What I think, but I am not sure, the shooter says he has serious doubts about his shooting skills or he has non at all, in that case the rifle will not perform but that does not change its intrinsic accuracy. But the rifle could have serious deficiencies to prevent the rifle to perform.

For a rifle to perform, the shooter should first practice shooting skills. Make himself familiar with its mechanical functions which is all that is needed to to make a rifle shoot and take advantage of its inherent accuray.

I suppose there are lots of parts for a rifle to shoot. But My Part seams like as if I am disconected when the rifle does not shoot? :? Then why shoot if you are not with it? This is not a sport you do in a trance. Anyone for better insight?

Maybe a better statement would be when I do my part well since we are not automatons, we are human and have good days and bad. Just because we don't shoot well sometimes doesn't mean we can't shoot well at all. Just depends on how focused, cool, calm and collected you are when shooting.

:D Theproblem has been fixed. I did not send the Handi to H&R instead I had my gunsmith fix it. Back in business and will let you know how it turns out. You're right some days at the bench are better than others esp. the closer to 60 we inch.    Jess
