Rem. 721 in 30-06

I may not have been looking for one, but it was one of those deals you can't pass up. I found it at my local gun shop that's just overrun with used rifles right now. The wood doesn't have a scratch and the blueing still looks great. The trigger doesn't have that modern lawyer proof feel to it, just about 3 lbs. One curious thing was a proof mark on the right side of the barrel. My gun dealer said it was a Winchester barrel that Remington had used on a few of these rifles. It even came with a burris scope.

It sure sounds like you have picked up an interesting rifle. I like the "plain vanilla" of the Model 721, a no frills classic. The '06, well, that one works! and the Burris scope, solid American quality! I'm curious about the barrel information you have... Perhaps someone on the forum has some info...?

My local gun dealer is in the same family business since 1870, so he's pretty knowledgeable about these things. I'll see if he can furnish any other info on it and pass it along here.
I did see that Remington has a recall on the 721 and 722 for the safety and trigger. I've read a bit about it and it seems to me just another lawyer inspired scheme to change the trigger pull to court proof levels. They want $20.00 to inspect the gun for safety and clean it up. If it needs work they will do what's needed for the same $20.00. I would be glad to do it if I had a guarrantee that it would come back with the same trigger.

Got to the range today, with many different 30-06 loads in tow. I usually shoot at 50 yards when working up loads. I had two loads that really shined from the 721.  I think I'm going to set up to use the 180gr. load. It used a 180 gr. Sierra with a COL of 3.300" over 57.0 gr. of H4350 for an estimated 2750 fps. It shot a one hole group that measured .14" at 50 yards. For a rifle as old as this is, I'm quite impressed.

Don't let anyone touch that trigger. The model 721 is the father of the model 700.

Go up to sniper country, and search for trigger adjustments for the model 700. It's the same trigger, and can be adjusted down to about 3 lbs without too much concern.
