300 grain speer psp bullets for pigs?
« on: August 14, 2005, 01:03:07 PM »
Has anyone ever used a speer plated soft point 300 grainer in 44 or 45 on pigs or other game ? I have an upcoming hog hunt. I'll be using my rsb in 44 or maybe my blackhawk in 45. I already have loaded/shot some in 44 loaded with h-110. thanks for any info

I have a Ruger Redhawk in .45 LC and load 300gr bullets upto 1200fps.  The Hornady probable expand but drive all the way through.  I'm guessing that the soft point would expand less and penetrate more.  Please note that this load has only been used so far on two hogs the biggest being about 225 lb.

They should do the job, I like the idea of a heavy bullet for all handgun hunting, Hard cast gas checked seem to work best for me. But if you don't load then then the speer 300 grainer should do the job, Good luck :) .....Joe.........

For hogs, I like the 300 gr. hard cast bullets. Great penetration.  :D

I don't trust jacketed bullets on hogs, not the big ones anyway. I prefer a hardcast and heavy for caliber. The last time I used a jacketed .429" bullet on hogs was about a 200 pounder. Hit him between the eyes with a 300 XTP from perhaps 15' off my toes as he came for me. He dropped to the shot natually but the bullet barely made it thru the head and lodged in the ham on his right side in two pieces. A hard cast would have exited easily. It did the job but sure made me wonder if it would have on other than a brain shot. I've not used jacketed since.

graybeard, sorry about the e-mail . I fixed it. The reason I asked about speer 300 gr psps was that it is supposed to be tougher than the xtp. It's also supposed to expand above 1300 fps and I'll be only going 1200. Ross Seyfried said in Handloader#205 on page 32 that it was an good choice. I know that article is about the 45 colt but I'll be in the same fps range. Next time I'll try one of the lbt type bullets just to experiment. I'll let you know how it went.
