I personally don’t like any 17 or 20 caliber bores, but to each his own.  There are many wildcat cartridges in 17 caliber, too many to list.  The 17 Remington is a factory loading.  You might be looking for the 17 Ackley Hornet see link for article.  http://www.varminthunter.org/article3.shtml

Try looking up info on the .17 & .22CCM, originally from Cooper Arms of Montana...quite similar to the .17HMR & .22 Mag in appearance/size but reloadable. i have 2 of the .22CCMs...good shooters.

If you reload and are willing to spend $ 100 or so for dies you can get any thing you want in a custom chambered rifle for a price. I shoot the .17 AH. It can be loaded down to .17 HMR velosities, but I load .19 gn. Calhoon bullets at 3600 fps. Shoots point blank to abt 290 yrds. with 10.4 gns. of powder. The .17 HMR fires a 17 gn. bullet at 2750 fps. The .17 AH is not for people just getting started relaoding because presures can jump very fast in this round and it`s easy to blow up a gun with this round if you don`t know what your doing.
