Taperd Barrel or Heavy Barrel?
« on: August 15, 2005, 01:24:40 PM »
I recently bought an Encore, 50 cal. muzzelloader.  I'm hoping to have a new barrel by deer season.  After much research (most of which was done here) I've decided to go with a 7mm-08, 24 inch barrel.  I was curious which barrels seem to be more accurate, the tapered or the heavy.  Thanks for any input.

Johnny
I have a few barrels for my Encore and they are all tapers. I was sent a heavy barrel accidentally in .257 Roberts and I sent it back for a taper being the barrel was too heavy to cart around the woods. So...........In my opinion get the taper.

Taperd Barrel or Heavy Barrel?

Johnny, I have a 7mm08 from the custom shop that is a 24" heavy stainless and a 24" blued taper in a 6.5 x 55.  Both shoot about one inch from the bench.  I think the heavy barrel is a little more accurate shooting off hand due to the stability. I have not made any modifications to the trigger or hammer spring but do use washers between the barrel and forearm.

I have 3 standard taper and one heavy taper barrel and the heavy taper seems to end up in the gun safe most of the time.  They are all plenty accurate and the standard taper barrels just feel better to me.  They are a little on the light side for off hand shots but I don't take many of those.  IMO they handle like a dream.  I doubt I will get any more of the heavy barrels.

For any of you that have a ML, and a heavy barrel, are they similar.  My encore is a laminated thumbhole, and I love the fit and feel with the ML barrel.  Would a heavy barrel duplicate this feel more closely than the standard taper?
