Bore lapping and tuning Mod 94..?
« on: August 15, 2005, 04:25:57 PM »
Just got a NIB Mod 94 357mag today.

Local Big 5 had one on sale for $319.99! Didn't think twice about getting it, since the same gun had a tag of $379.99 last week! And I've seen them on the auction sites at over $400.

There has been some discussion on the NEF/H&R single shot forum regarding lapping the bores in new barrels (and I have done it with a couple of mine) so I'm wondering if anyone has done this on their Marlin levergun? And if so what kind of result (if any) did you get?

Also, the action is rather stiff, and I believe I read (or heard) somewhere about a very basic way of smoothing the action. Anyone have any info/comments about this?

I am looking very much forward to playing with this neat little gun, and using it in Cowboy Action Shooting.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers
Kerry

tallyho, I have an older 1894 marlin 44 mag(micro-groove) that I just finished fire lapping the barrel. I wanted to shoot cast bullets in it. It shot jacketed bullets fine. It worked good for me group size shrunk from around 5-6" at 100 yards to 2 1/2" at 100 yards. Hope this helps.

GJ,
Thanks for the reply. I fully intended to lap it anyway 'cause I'm planning to shoot a lot of cast bullets. I just wanted to know if anyone else did theirs.

Haven't shot it yet, plan to later in the week, so I'll clean it really well and get some loads ready for fire lapping.

Cheers

For tuning tips, visit www.sassnet.com and search for Marauder's website. It has good instructions for tuning up the Marlin '94's.

Not written specifically about the Marlin lever in caliber .357, but this series of articles by Marshall at Beartooth just may perk your interest. It sure did mine!

My pleasure. Marshall impressed me being quite knowlegeable, & helpful with all questions.

I have been shooting his bullets in my S&W 629 .44, & they strike me (pun un-intended) as a top notch product.  I plan to order one of his fire lapping kits, in the near future.

tallyho, did you ever find a good site for tuning up your Marlin. Just pick up a 1894C from Big 5 and was also looking to tune the action.

Lat me know, Tom
