Ok I know there's a bunch of these out there, so what are you guys' scope recommendations. Really can't afford the high end ones but up to $100 is within my means.

I think a good 4 X fix power would be best, that's what I did.
unless you think you want to throw a big chunk of lead a way
out there. then I might put some thing else on 45-70.

I agree a 4x is less likely to have problems but a goos 1-4x like a leopold compact would be great. I put a peep & a fire sight on mine like Quick!

works well at the ranges I shoot

great caliber

Weaver K4 or K6.

I have a K6 on my 45-70 and like it a lot.

ETA:  They have the K4 on Optic Zone for $119.00 and the K6 for $125.00.  I got mine from Natchez on sale for $99.00

I put a Weaver 2.5X on my Guide Gun, which weighs the same as my .45-70 Handi, and I've had no problems.  Got it from Natchez for under $100--their current catalog lists the K2.5 for just over $100. I'm keeping open sights on my NEF for now.

I'm with the jtrain... If vision permits, I would keep the Handi unscoped.
Don't get me wrong, I hunt almost exclusively with scope. I just like to have a deer rifle open sighted for close in hunting like I grew up on in the Hudson Valley. I've seen the caution over the factory sights, but inside 100 yards, for me they are functional for deer.
If you must, I'm real partial to that $100 Nikon 4x32 at Walmart.

I have a 1.5-6x38 S&W on one of mine, made by Hakko of Japan. It has rainshield coating on the exterior lenses. It's a shotgun scope parallaxed at 75yds and has held up fine to 2400fps 300gr nosler loads and is accurate enough for 2½" groups at 200yds.

I would also recommend the Mueller 2-7x32 Multi-shot, I have one that shares duty on my 30-30 Handi and an 835 Ultimag.

Lik2;
I have the Simmons 2.5x Intermediate Eye Relief shotgun scope in .45-70, .44mag  Handirifles and a Savage 24P, .22rf over 20ga.
On all 3 they mount far enough forward the hammer extension is not needed.
CDNN Sports has the scope for $20, rings for under $5 and Midway has a Weaver rail for Handirifles, #82,about $7.
You do need to cut another slot in the mount rail, but that is a 5 minute job with a hacksaw and file.

John:

Eye relief...eye relief...eye relief...you know my favorites...but...for the money...find yourself a Simmons Aetech...even a 3x10 is going to give you 5" of eye relief...... I've seen how you shoot with my Marlin 45-70 and the loads you want to use in it... :) Don't go with any scope with less...even my Leupold wasn't  quite enough for you with my Marlin...remember.....

Mac's right on about the eye relief, even the Leupy 2-7x33 has only about 4"....that's the reason I went with the S&W, it's got 5½"of eye relief, that plus the Rainshield lense coating.

OK, i'm gonna go in the opposite direction as everyone else and suggest the Bushnell Trophy red/green dot. Eye relief is unlimited. The optice zone has them for $79. If i had one that's the route i would take. It's a brush gun to me and would be nothing more. The dot sight is all you need.

Ok I have a Swift Premium 3-9x40 already that is a candidate. Also I have an Aetec 2.8-10 that is riding on my 30-06 Vanguard right now. I have read a lot in the shotgun forum about the 12 gauge USH owners having good success with the Tasco World Class line of scopes. I know Tasco - Trashco, but they are now owned by Bushnell and I have heard quality has excelled and the WC scopes can be had for a really good price. I also have a line on a Meuller Tactical 4-16x50 that could be had for decent price too. Maybe the Mueller could ride on the 45-70 or trade places with the Aetec. Just some thoughts.
Good advice so far, as always, and I appreciate the input and am looking forward to more.

The Meuller Tacticle is a great scope...but doesn't have near the eye relief you'll want for the 45-70.....while 3" is plenty for some...just picture moving up the stock on my Marlin a couple of inches... .....the Meuller also is a A/O modle...and doesn't lend itself to fast focusing at close ranges...yes...it focuses perfectly ...down to 12 yards...but...not...the best for fast snap shooting you'll likely to wind up with hunting hogs...it's a great scope and I really like mine...and will eventually have another for a lighter kicking rifle.....now...swapping that Aetech off your 06' and putting the Meuller on it...would work pretty good.and just might be the way for you to go....if you want to waste your money on the Tasco...then go for it...but...you'll be sending it back after a short while after shooting heavy 45-70 loads over it...

This one wouldn't be a half bad little choice:

http://www.riflescopes.com/products/200089/burris_1.75-5x20_fullfield_ii_rifle_scope.htm

Lifetime warranty, pretty well-made scope, light and handy, good magnfic range for the caliber, under $200.

But you said under $100, so in that case I'd run with this one:

http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3312

That circle-X reticle is FAST for acquisition!

This Weaver K-series is only $15 past your criteria.  It looks ok, but I'd take the Bushnell Trophy over it:
