Fine steel wool (0000) with paste wax, in a swirling motion, as when polishing shoes (does anybody do that anymore? )

That's exactly correct,  I use almost any wax containing carnuba,  Put on a light coat after the steel fur and buff.  It'll glow but not shine, more of a sheen, like satin,..  I apply the wax cross grain and rub it off with the grain..  Don't know that it matters though.
