Has anyone chronoed the 500 S&W in the handirifle?

I just got my 500 handirifle in and the reloading dies, etc.
I'm going to load some 400gr Sierras and 325gr Speer in it.
JUst wondering what the boost in velocity is out of a rifle length barrel and how hadr does it kick.
Winchester seems to have the most powerful factory load along with Corbon. I bought some Magtech 400gr SP loads as they were the cheapest to be had--$28/20. After that , its gonna be all reloads.
I am guessing somewhere between 200-300fps gain in the rifle length barrel, which is realized when shooting 454 casull loads in a rifle and maybe even 400fps.
It shoudl turn those hogs into a blizzard of sausage!! On a side note, my buddy in texas kills them regularly using a 22 mag rifle and a through the ear hole shot. It drops them on the spot. My 45 LC magnum loads using a 250gr XTP bullet over 25gr of H110 shot through both shoulders on a 200 lber and exited. Certainly no need for my 454 casull Ruger unless i wanted to shoot 3 at a time.

I'm just theorizing here, but if factory ammo is designed to get the most out of a handgun barrel, the same ammo isn't going to produce that much different performance out of a longer barrel with the exception of pressure lost due to the revolver cylinder gap. My thinking is that to get  significant performace change out of any handgun caliber in a rifle, you're gonna have to handload with slower burning powders to take advantage of the longer barrel....specially since the 500S&W ammo is already loaded to the max to begin with.... :?  And this is a free BTT for ya, too!!

I'm just guessing, but given the immediate loss of pressure from an 8" barrel'd handgun and the fact that the handi barrel is 22" that there will be enough residual pressure to give at least 100-200fps over a pistol.

A good cross check would be the 44 mag guys, if any have pistols to cross check with, using factory ammo or loads that duplicate factory.

just saw a 500 s&w nice big hole fiber optic sights, I personally don't need it with my 45-70, soon to be 445 & soon to be 444 marlin :grin:

I f I didn't have the above I would have picked it up. Also saw a nice 204 ruger with a camo lam stock I may need to go back & get. Brass is kinda high though for the 445, 500, &204 compaired to other caliburs but ya get what you pay for putting an order in now for 445 may need to add some 204 to it :eek:

With lighter bullets the 44 mag can gain up to 400 fps with the rifle barrel.The 240 gr bullets gain a lot of fps. with the longer barrel. Just check the loads for a rifle and the handgun in 44 mag. and you'll see alot of difference with the same powder and load.  Digger

Yup, but not near as much difference in the 300gr...only about 150fps according to hodgdon using max loads of H110 or H4227. Wonder if the same holds true for the light for caliber loads in the 500S&W?? Guess we'll just have ta wait until someone runs a .500 over a chrony. :wink:

In .357 Mag I get between 300 and 600 fps more out of a 22" Handi than I do out of a 4" revolver.  Same load, just a different gun that shoots them.

A 125 gr Sierra JHC will do 2050 fps out of the Handi and 1460 fps out of a 4" Mod 66 S&W.

I shot a couple of Corbon out of an 8 3/8 ported 500 S&W Monday that were very managable, but I think I'll stick with my .45-70 Handi.  :grin:
