Ultra Scope Rail Question
« on: August 18, 2005, 07:59:19 AM »
Stopped by the local gun shop and came across a neat Ultra Varmint in .223. Followed me home.    There's an adjustment screw on the scope rail, far forward, and is contact with the barrel.  Not sure if this screw should be touching the barrel or not.  Can't find anything to tell me the purpose of this screw? How should it be adjusted?  Comments appreciated.  DG

Several have asked that question. I believe the main reason it's there is for added strength or support for an extra long or heavy scope. Personally I didn't adjust mine to touch the barrel, as I don't like anything to touch it, but some do. How it affects accuracy seems to be a subject of debate. Congrats on your new purchase :agree: . I am sure you will have fun with it. What kind of scope do you plan on putting on it?

If you don't mount a heavy, long scope on it, it doesn't need to be adjusted close to the barrel. Spec from the factory is .0015" off the barrel using an automotive type feeler gauge or just a piece of printer paper thickness. It should NOT be touching the barrel.

Appreciate the reply to my question.  Thanks

Have a Leopold V-X III, 6.5-20 that will ride of the rifle.  Will use Burris Signature Z's to hold the scope.    This combination is going to be one of my main PD dusters.    Thanks again.   DG

I still don't understand what the screw is there for.  If it doesn't touch the barrel, then exactly what purpose does it serve?  Why not remove it?
