hornady interbond??
« on: August 18, 2005, 08:24:34 AM »
has anyone tried one of the 500 grain hornady interbond bullets in their 45-70?? it is a .458 dia. so it should shoot pretty good out of the bc.
what i wonder is would it perform, i.e. expand at velocities around 1300-1400 fps???
also what would be a good scope to use on the bc for shooting between 100 and maybe out to 400 yrds?? one for around a hundred bucks??
not asking for much am i?? lol :-D
thanks

About a year ago I  thought about that exact same thing, but Hornady told me that bullet is designed for shooting out of the .458 win mag and would not reliably expand at velocities an NEF/H&R would be capable of,  so I sold the box of bullets for what I had in em which I got on closeout at a local shop going out of business. If you want to shoot heavy loads, I would suggest either the 460gr Cast Performance WLNGC or the 525gr Beartooth Pile Driver, both are excellent performing bullets designed for the 45-70.

I've got a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 Mildot on one of my BCs, got it used for $125, IIRC, new one sells for $174..

If you're a stock crawler, I wouldn't recommend any scope with less than 4" of eye relief, 5" would be better, though. Doubt you'll find anything new for $100, too.

The Simmons Aetec might be had for $100 used, it comes with 5" eye relief, in the 3X10 model.

How much expansion does a person really need with a 45 caliber bullet?

I tried one about 15 years ago, before all the Interbond hoopla. I loaded it to about 1200'. fired it into a dirt bank at 20 yards and dug it out. It penetrated 4 feet and you could have reloaded it.

I'd put my money on a wide, flat meplat on a cast bullet before I'd shoot a FMJ, which is essentailly what a 500gr hornady RN #45049 would be at 45-70 velocities.
