I will be going on an elk hunt next year. this question is mainlly for everyones reading enjoyment. Please list the guns below in the order that you would carry for elk. 300RUM 180 scirocco
7mmRum 150 scirocco
270wsm 140 Accu Bond

I think you have them listed in the right order already. I don't think you can beat the .300 mags.

I would probably take the 300 RUM and leave the rest at home, Its not my absolute fovorite but of the ones listed but i like the idea of a 180gr bullet... Good luck Sir.........Joe........

Well I always take my 300 win mag. I use my 30-06 for a back up, but my 300 is my baby.

That sounds alot like me, I use a Lam. stock Sendero 300WM & I take a
Win. 70 Fea. Wt. 30-06AI as a back-up for anyone in our group of 4 that
may need it. The Sendero shoots the 180 X bullet with extreme long range accuracy & the 30-06AI likes the 180 Part.
The 300RUM is a great round & if starting from scratch it would be my
first choice, but my Sendero is too accurate to leave behind & it's power
has never been lacking.

I was just going by his list. I would take my 300 Win Mag also.

Any of those rifles will do the job with the ammunition provided. I would rate them not on the cartridge, but on the rifle that shoots them. A light weight short barreled rifle for the trees and brush, a heavier long barreled rifle for the open parks. I might also switch the 270 to a 150 gr Speer Grand Slam.

I'd take all those magnums down to the gunstore and trade them off. I'd get a .35 Whelen for elk, a .30-06 to back it up on elk and for any other use on big game and a 7-08 cuz it's my all time favorite. Now that's what I'd do.

7mm rem Mag,160 gr nosler Accubonds,thats a great combo for anything in NA thats not named grizz. :grin:

I think that the 35 Whelen is a great round too & it could take the place
of my 30-06 back-up easily, but it won't fill the role of my Sendero. But
I am open minded. The first time that I see a Whelen group as good as
my Sendero at 500 yard's, not to count the difference in traj. and more importantly wind drift, I just might haul it down to the gunshop for trade.
But I do not EVER expect that to happen. That is no slam to the 35 Whelen, it is just apples & oranges & depends on where we Elk hunt &
possible yardages.

The order of the list is what I woould pick as well.

35 Whelen is a great all around cartridge for North American game.
I have one in a M700 Classic. For Elk, I would take the Whelen as back up to my M700 LSS in 338 RUM.

I shot a 5 pt bull in CO with the 338 RUM and 210 gr PT at a range of 350 yds. 1 shot kill, he dropped in his tracks. The bullet made complete penetration on the bull.
BTW, I shot weeky 20-25 rounds from field positions at 200 and 300 yds over an entire summer and fall in preperation for my hunt. Thank goodness for reloading and Nosler seconds.

You ain't gonna see blown up lungs like you do in deer, so skip the velocity and look for penetration. Caliber is the least consideration.

Will the 180 gr swift scirocco do it? Have also thought about loading 200gr Accubond, but would rather stay with the 180's. A lot of yall like the partitions, bearclaws, orA frames, but I have just allways gotten better flight out of tipped bullets. Have had great sucess with the scirocco. Have not had the chance to field test the accubonds yet.

Any of those cartridges will work on elk. I would prefer a 150g bullet for the .270 and a 160g for the 7mm RUM.

The Scirocco bullets have a heavier jacket than the Accubond and would be my preference between the two, but at RUM velocities I would go one better and use a Swift A-Frame, Speer Trophy Bonded or North Fork bonded.

dancoman, Yes, absolutely the 180 Scirroco will do it for you!! I shoot that bullet in my 300 WBY and it is dy-no-mite!! You can expect about 70 to 75% weight retention and great penetration with at least a double caliber expansion. I have never had one fail. Hope this helps, God Bless

My 300 Win Mag is my favorite rifle shooting a 180 gr bullet. Excellent for Elk.

I drew a cow elk tag for Wyoming and my choices are 300 Win mag with 200 grain Speer hotcor's, 30-06 using 180 grain Speer Mag tips, 308 pushing 180 grain Hornady spire points, 270 / 150 grain Speer HC or if it gets finised in time a 376 Steyr with 270 grain spire points. I give no particular order except I want to use the Steyr as it's a new toy.

The .300 Win Mag would be my first choice of those you listed, but I would not use the Speer Hot-Cor in either the .300 or the .270.

Instead I would choose a bullet that will hold together better at .300 velocities - the Speer Grand Slam or Nosler Partition at a minimum.

If you want a pointed bullet get the Swift Scirocco, Nosler Accubond or Hornady Interbond, bu I have doubts that these are better than the Partition and my not be as good - the Partition has the cross-member to limit expansion, the others sometimes expand down to their base.

My first choice would be one of the following: Swift A-Frame, Speer Trophy Bonded or North Fork bonded. I would use 180g for the .300 and 150g for the .270.
