Arron:

I have a couple of Fred's springs and will install one in it..the trigger is plenty light enough but might sweeten it up a bit......and I will take my sweet loving time honing the lug...just as I learned the hard way to do...I'll steel bed the barrel in the forearm...and devcon the barrel recesses on the receiver...then the beautification process will start up for the barrel and reworking the finish on the stock...then...I might think about working up loads for it...so...I'll try some of the factory fodder and see how it shoots first...then again...I may skip rebluing it myself...and send it off the Wayne for a complete polish job and his bead blasting...then a nice matt finish...and restamp just like my 338-06...if I do that...I'll have him fill the site notch on the barrel and fill the screw holes for the front site since it will be a scoped rifle anyway...

Mac.

If you do all of the above and you have a decent bore, you should end up with a good shooting rifle. I may not compare to a bolt gun but it will shoot
consistent. Hornets are pretty good shooters. Did yo check the bore the older hornets have .223" bore and some .224 bullets will complain.

The lighter bullets with a shorter body are best in a 223 bore.

I am going out tomorrow to bang off another box of 75gr sizzlers.

I am planing on hunting with my new handi 25-06( after it comes back from the factory) If not, then the old meat getter, Rem 760 30-06.  If I get any bonus doe tags, I ve been kicking aroud the idea of dragging out my old Mosin Nagant 7.62x54r.  If all else fails, or i get into some nasty brush , my model 94  375Win will do the job

Same one I"ve used for the last 13/14 years, and 23 deer later....NEF in 45/70.  400 gr Speer at 1750fps.  'Course this year it sports a new stock(curly maple) and new scope(vari X II), so it's like i'm using a new one.

Fred:

No...I haven't had much time to do much of anything this month...but...I will slug it and see what it the bore is...I certainly want it shooting good before giving to the oldest...I figured if I was going to spoil him...might as well do it right and give him a tack driver :)

I haven't played any with the 22 calibers...and will wait and see how it shoots with the factory stuff...I wonder how the older Hornets do with the available factory stuff...and if they have a preference like the new ones...???..If it doesn't do well with it...it will become a canadate for rechambering and to something a little different...perhaps the 222Rem or 225Win.if I stay with the 22 cal...but if I have to rebore...then I was thinking he might like to have a classic little round...like the 250 Savage..of course I'll have to use my extra SB-2 frame for this...but...I really don't mind...

Given H&R's propensity to be on the overbore side, I'd be willing to bet that .224" bullets will shoot great!! Only the real old 22 Hornets were bored for .223"..... Fred, you're dating yourself again!!! :-D  :-D  :-D  From all reports here and my experience with the 22 hornet Handi, max loads of Lil'gun and the 35gr .224" Vmax in rem brass are the cats meow!!! An FYI, max loads won't fit in win brass, just ask me!!!

If you do have a .223 bullet bore, the available bullet options are extremely limited!!

Ditto here, but the Max will probably get the nod first as I expect I will be in a close woods situation.  If I end up hunting where some open field is involved, my Ruger 77 in 30-06 will be the go-to gun.  That's unlikely tho, She's a closet queen, hasn't seen the light of day in years.

:D  Mine will my 25-06 Ultra. After saturday I found  have a real shooter on my hands and it will be my speed goat and Muley gun for the seson. I'm trying to track down an Ultra in 30-06 for my elk rifle. I'll carry a 44Mag if a bear or cat geta to curious. I like single shots due to my hands are as straight as Tricky Dick was straight. :-D

My first choice will be my new 280 synthetic.  I know, it's ugly-but it sure feels nice.  Just mounted a 3.5x10x44 Swift scope and bore sighted it.  Loading some ammo up tonite and to the range on Wed.  Can't wait!  If something happens, It will be the BC, or the 38-55, or the 30-30, or the 25-06, etc;.  Too many choices, too few opportunities.

Although not a Handi-Rifle, I'm still using a single shot rifle

Remington Rolling Block in 45-90, 510-gr Bison Buster, cast 40:1, 85.0 gr of FFg Goex

In the black powder cartridge world this bullet, although a 510-gr cast 40:1 works very well with ALL game, and with no blood shot damage.

I'll be using my .35 Whelen Handi!  Hoping for a Grizzly or Black Bear at Moose camp next week.  I'll also be taking my 22-250 for wolves.

Then using my Huntsman in November for the Muzzleloader Moose hunt.

Two barrels and two actions, and they are not interchangeable, nor would any other Handi barrel fit. Another Handi would have to be a complete rifle.

At this point I don't know whether I want another one.

When I hunt some of the thicket stands on our familie's old home place
or a favorite place in the Ozark Nat. Forrest that has Big Bucks, Hogs &
Bears on the same range, I will use my .450 Marlin Ultra & Redhawk on
my side.
I sure am looking forward to this & the cool air!!!

Egad, man, now THAT's a hand cannon.  :)  I'll be using a .243 Handi, a .45-70 Handi, and a Howa turnbolt in .25-06, as well as compound bow & muzzleloader; maybe a couple others.

I wanted so bad to post about that 600 Nitro Express, but it was a TC frame. Love em or hate em, you have to admit, TC has one incredibly strong frame. Man I wish we could have a Handi that strong.
And Mac I hear ya buddy, now that the heat is breaking a little we can all get more time in. I got to order some of those Fusions for my 06. My friend used them in both his 308 and his 243, and got excellent results.
I tell ya for factory ammo, this stuff rocks.

I hear ya on the Fusion ammo. If the loads i'm working up for my 270 don't work out then i'm gonna try those. I've heard nothing but awesome results on those.
