450 Marlin
« on: August 19, 2005, 12:19:34 PM »
Big day for me.  Went to a gun shop (Henry's Guns) that "EVOC ONE" told me about (214 mile round trip).  But it was worth it to me today.  Went there to put a deposit on an Ultra 450 Marlin.  Thought the Virginia one-gun-a-month law would keep me from bringing it home today since I got the 7.62x39 last weekend.  But Patrick Henry, the owner, put me straight.  It is one-"Handgun"-a-month law that Virginia has.  Buy all the long-guns you want.  Sure was a nice surprise for me.  So I brought home the Ultra 450 Marlin.  Really have no NEED for a 450 Marlin, but Handi-Holic-Itis allows for just WANT.  Thanks EVOC ONE for the tip.  Also picked up another Nikon 3-9x40 Buckmaster for $79 from a Wal-Mart along the way.

Way to go Mike;

How many more Handi's are you gonna buy before the month runs out?
I can't remember who it was but on the old H&R/NEF sight, he was shooting a 450 and posted that it had busted his nose three times looking through his scope. Make sure you got plenty of eye relief Mike so it don't happen to you.
Congratulations!

I had a barrel and honestly it didn't kick bad at all. I had synthetics stocks on it too. I don't think you'll have anything to worry about.

Congratulations Mike!  I'm very glad to hear you got the .450.  Glad to help out.

Maybe we Handi-holics should start providing locations of Handi/Ultra's that we come across and don't want for ourselves.

Now that you found out your not restricted on long guns, we have to plan the "crawl" we spoke about.

I like to travel, so I look at those long drives as R&R.

Enjoy!!!

I traded some ammo for a 450 Ultra with lam. stock. It has a steel rod in
the stock & I am going to take it out. The amount of recoil does not warrant having the rod.

I think a lot of people will disagree with that since felt recoil is kind of a personal thresh hold thing. The 450 Marlin shooting 350gr loads at 2000fps in a 7lb rifle has over 37 ft/lbs recoil. For comparison, a 9lb 375 H&H shooting 270gr loads at 2700fps has 36 ft/lbs recoil. A 7lb 45-70 shooting 300gr loads at 1800fps has 24 ft/lbs recoil.

Thanks Everyone.

If you want to talk recoil, I have a Ruger#3 in 45-70 with its metal buttplate.  Only addition to it is a Leupold fixed 2.5.  Ruger Loads in it are quite unpleasant but while hunting you never notice.

EVOC ONE: Good idea about letting others know about the guns we DONT buy.  There are alot of people reading these posts but don't chime in, they might buy them.  Any weekends in September that you may be free?

Going next weekend to take my oldest grand-daughter to school.  Her first year of college.  She got a full-ride at Washington & Lee in Virginia.  She is a great kid.

Yea, I may be coming back on here saying I was wrong about taking the
rod out, if so I will post it. I just know it does not seem very hard now.
I do have a slip-on pad on it, & the Ultra is heavier than the 45-70 Handi. All of those things matter & I am not as sensitive to recoil as some.  I will let you know.

Hello Mike.

September would be good.  I'll keep in touch.

Congrats for the grand-daughter.  A free ride.  Thats great!  Going to college is a wonder time in a young persons life and a proud, but sad moment for the parents.  Very nice that you as a grand parent would accompany her as well.  It would seem that you and the Mrs. raised a family that has maintained strong family ties.  Very Nice!!

I have a 450 Marlin and it will definently pounds you with heavy loads. Its not bad with some of the lighter loads like the 45-70 uses. I have a 300 Weatherby mag and its a pussy cat compared to the 450 in recoil. Zeak

Ok thread is old but, you can purchase more than one gun a month in the state of virginia.  The law says one handgun every thirty days.  They mean thirty days also a neighbor purchased two handguns one in each month but only 28 days difference, yeah he was arrested went to court and everything was dismissed.
