« on: August 19, 2005, 12:54:17 PM »
I think I am going to use 2 24inch stakes for my coyote traps this year but would like to know should I go with rebar stakes or smooth rod stakes
total for this year so far
3 grinners
2 coyotes
4 coons and
1 skunk

 so far

Try them both and see which ones work best in your location's soil conditions for you. I crossed-staked with long rebar for years. It was way overkill for holding a coyote, but I did it mostly to cut down on my theft losses. If you hoof it back long ranges to make your sets, rebar adds some weight to your equipment load you'll be toting back in to those places. I walk back to many of my set locations and was main reason I moved away from rebar. My rebar staked sets always held well, just was a lot of additional poundage to tote back to set locations where I make sets. I went to cable stakes and lightened my load considerably.
I do still use a lot of rebar but in locations where the distance from my vehicle to the set is not more than 1/4 mile or so.
I like rebar for staking my snares though.

If your in ground soft enough to require cross staking.  You might want to consider cable stakes. I personally use one 3/4 angle iron stakes in heavy ground with no problems. Where they will not hold I use the cable stakes with good results.

well my bro ( pintaildrake) and i use 1/2 inch rebar w/ a heavy nut and washer welded on top. we have lengths of 36", 24", and 18"... the 36'ers are for the coyotes and beaver. the 24 and 18 are for the other critters here in S. IL. those three lengths will hold just bout anything when in a double stake rig.
Some  people shouldn't be allowed to breed.

for beaver, if you have experience, use smooth rod in the mud, it will spin around adding a swivel effect.
