I live just about 5 miles south of where the Battle of Lone Jack Missouri took place.  I didn't realize the impact that had on our area until recently.  Our church was roofing a house for a member and I learned that it was the only house not burned by the Union in this area nearly all the way to Kansas City because the farmers here were aiding and abetting.  Seems the Union used this one house for themselves but needed to stop the locals from restocking the Confederate army with food supplies and horses and such.  I have a neighbor 2 miles to the east of me who believes but has not yet confirmed that some high brass from the Battle of Lone Jack was buried on the land he purchased.  That was his major purchase influencer and he spends many hours every fall and winter looking for this grave.  I have never found any on my little parcel, but apparently relics are very frequently found in our area after plowing fields and such.  Any how, don't really know anything, I just thought you all might find that interesting.  I was going to use my draft horses to pull a canon in a reinactment as a favor for a friend but unfortunately, I don't have period appropriate harness--mine is nylon.  Oh well, I'm just rambling.

Where you live is part of what was known as the "Burnt District" after the issue of the infamous  "Order #11" by Union General Thomas Ewing in 1863 . This proclamation pretty much gave the Union soldiers a free hand to handle all of 3 counties and part of another , any way they wanted to clear out Southern Partisans and sympathizers. Ewing was a brother in law to General T. Sherman who did some burning himself in Geogia during 1864 .
Many do not realize it but Missouri ranked #3 in the most battles and skirmishes during the war , and you live in an area where much of that took place . If you have not visited the battlefield and visitor center in Lexington , you should as it is very interesting .

Here, in Virginia, it is absolutely illegal to disturb any grave.  If a relic hunter comes accross a grave (bones) he must put everything right back where it was.  You can imagine the temptation to ignore this law, and surely it is broken without anyone the wiser.
