Is the Buff Classic frame SB2?

I have found a BC at what I think is a reasonable price and am wondering what  other barrels it can take. I don't have the serial number at the moment, but can get it tomorrow.

In the meantime, am just wondering if anybody knows the answer.

The BC and Target both are SB2 frames, although they're case colored and look like a pardner frame. My 338-06 is on a Target 38-55 frame, shoots great!!! :wink:

Thanks guys for the speedy response....

Tim, you may recall that in May, I asked about a BC in 45-120 that I found at gunshow, that gun subsequently disappeared before I got back to it... well, it has resurfaced (with a different seller) at another gunshow, and if it stays surfaced, I'll go for it tomorrow!

It ain't so much procrastination, but I just found out about it and the show closes in 15 minutes, and there's just too much for me to do after getting back today from a trip away, but I will have some time to get it tomorrow.

Besides, I wanted to check with you all here on GB on whether it has as SB2 frame.

Does the serial number on the barrel underlug match the last 3 of the serial number on the frame? That and checking with H&R is the only positive way of knowing for sure if it's a BC frame or a pardner frame.

FWIW, Tanoose shot his 45-70 on an SB1 frame with no problems.....until we told him not to....just to be safe....

I'll check that info tomorrow, and it ain't so much that I'm reluctant to shoot it on the frame it has, because I already have a couple of frames that, according to the factory will take 30/30, 45/70, 357 mag, 44 mag etc. in that pressure range.

I just want to find if this one is an SB2 frame so that I can get higher pressure calibers for it.

I may be going against the grain here, but I'm trying to see if I can get away with minimizing my collection of frames/barrels... just the opposite of some you collector types - who shall remain nameless... :wink:  :wink:

38/55 - Target - 45/70 BC

I have a 38/55 target rifle on the way and I was wondering if one of you chaps know if I can get a 45/70 BC barrel with the Williams -  Lyman sight setup on it just like the 38/55 will have. I am new to these guns, so you might encounter some pretty dumb questions along the way. Thanks for any help given, this is a great place for answers.  - Gordy. :D

The BC and Target come with the Williams WGRS rear sight and the Lyman 17A front sight. If you order the barrel only, it will come with no sights at all as stated on the Acc barrel page. You'll have to order them separately.

I believe my 45-70 Shikari is an SB-1 frame from the factory.  Several guys from this site said "no problem, use trapdoor loads."  This quote says to me there's a safety issue.  H&R's unsafe?

The SB1 frame is a shotgun/rimfire frame, it's not designed for the pressures of a centerfire rifle in general. The SB2 frame is heat treated and designed for high pressure calibers like the .270 winchester at 65kpsi. I certainly wouldn't recommend shooting high level 2 levergun loads in the Shikari, but trapdoor loads that are equivilent to black powder loads shouldn't be a problem, they're not much above shotgun pressures which are well below 20kpsi.

:D  Hey Quicktdoo, I called H&R and I can get the sights for $55 and they will put them on the BC barrel. It should be like getting two nice rifles for one decent price. All thats left is to learn to load the shells and shoot it.   No big deal huh. Thanks for the info - Gordy.

That's a great price, if you get the Lyman 17A from www.Buffaloarms.com it's $26 and the Williams WGRS is $35 from Midway. The only problem I see with the 17A from H&R is more than one of us has had to replace it with a lower .404" tall sight cuz they shot way to low with the .584" tall H&R supplied sight. If you want to shoot more than 100yds with heavy bullets, you may need to replace the front sight. Lots of us put the Williams F-P target sight on ours for longer range shooting, too...

Thank you Quick, great looking gun. Is that the Williams sight on the rear? I may look into the sights now that you mention it. I got my reloader today, so that will be the next project. I need to wait on the gun first. It is great to get that new bike feeling again. See ya - Gordy.

That's the Williams F-P Target sight.  The sight that comes on the BC is the WGRS.... the F-P is also available from H&R

The front sight fits a standard ⅜" dovetail, the rear sights mount in the 2 exisitng rear scope base holes. I installed the .404" tall Lyman 17A sight and use a Lee Shaver sight insert set from Buffalo.
