Was at the range today, Man another scorcher.
My intentions were burn up some factory stuff and get the brass for reloading.
Shot some Federals and two kinds of Remingtons.
Well one rem shot good the other shot like crap. The Federal was second best on the best group. I was ready to leave so I decided to try the Fed. again. Shot one round about 11:00 oclock left about an inch. Next two were at 9:00 o'clock, then two more were at 7:00. group about 2-1/4".
I've got five rounds left and the barrel is really hot. So I decide it's time to go, and I think I'll fire the remaining 5 rounds. I shoot them and I can't believe it they are all clustered at 7:00 o'clock. Get home and measure the last seven rounds. 1.1 inches outer edge measured.
I don't understand this but all these rounds were fired with a really hot barrel.  :?

Oh well, one of those things I guess.

Heat in metal travels to edges, thats the reason for fins on an air cooled engine, not just to increase cooling surface. Anyway, I don't think that flutes stiffen so much (although they do act as stiffeners) as create heat sinks that more rapidly dissipate heat, least so I think, I'm prolly wrong. I have noticed this over the years, without exception octagon barrels shoot better than round barrels of the same size, even though the round has more material and should be stiffer. My Dad and I concluded that heat dissipation was the reason, and the edges of the octagon allowed this. I'm sure that this is not the whole story, as bench shooters go for the largest round barrel they can use, the idea being the bigger the barrel (more material), the more heat it takes to heat it up, the more shots you can get through a "cool" barrel, down side is of course the longer it will take to cool.

I wonder if anyone has ever played with a barrel that has cooling rings the lengh of the barrel, much like an air cooled cylinder. Would look very sci-fi but it should be quite efficient, far more so than flutes.

Do you think that these barrels may not be as sensitive to heat as the standard barrels? Due to heat dissipation on the flutes.  :shock:

Effects of Barrel Flutes

Removing metal to form flutes always reduces barrel stiffness(albeit a small amount). They do however, help to break-up and thereby thin the thermal boundary layer. Thinning the thermal boundary layer helps get rid of the heat faster. I believe this thinning effect would be small unless the barrel was quite hot. For hunting situations( except PD's) I would think the effect would not be noticeable.
