Rossi in 7.62x39mm
« on: August 21, 2005, 05:32:35 PM »
Just ordered a Rossi single shot in 7.62x39mm.  I have a couple other Rossi's, one in .357mag that is one of the best shooting rifles I own.  My wife also has a matched pair (.22lr/.410) of which she has shot more squirrels with that .410 than with any other gun.

Anyone have experience with the Rossi in 7.62x39mm?

I got is cause I have TONS of ammo in that caliber and can get more cheap pretty much anywhere.  Thought it would make a nice little light and inexpensive medium game hunter and plinker....

I'll give a review once I get it and shoot it a little...

So how does your Ruski Rossi shoot?  What kinds of ammo have you feed the gun?  Where did you find this rifle?  Do you have any pictures to share?  Thanks

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago.  If you are planning on using the cheap 7.62x39 ammo intended for the semi-autos you may not be very happy.  The primers are so hard, it takes my gun two hammer strikes to make the primer fire.  I tried the PMC 122 gr FMJ and it has the same problem, plus accuracy was lousy.

But with handloads in Winchester brass it has performed well.  I've been using Speer .308" 150gr FN (.30-30) bullets seated to an OAL of 2.250" with Hodgdon H335 powder and CCI-200 primers.

BTW, the included scope mount is made of aluminum with some sort of plastic coating on the outside.  Before you install it on the gun, I would recommend scraping the plastic off the bottom of the mount where it contacts the barrel to get a steadier seat.  And the hammer extension has to be installed BEFORE you put the scope on it...

Edz....did you have a chance to get out and shoot your 7.62?
Just curious because the NEF's are having a hard time shooting Wolf and...save me from saying this...surplus ammo.
Like Koveras said about the primmers being hard and deep set.

Argh that stinks if it won't fire surplus ammo that being the sole reason i'd get one, thanks for the heads-up on that.

I've been thinking about one of those myself. But if the cheap (wolf) ammo won't shoot in it I'll have to pass.
