Glock 27s jamming....
« on: August 21, 2005, 06:43:37 PM »
My 2 year old Glock 27 has begun jamming. Its a fail to feed problem, with hollow points catching the feed ramp. Happens with Winchester, Speer, and Remington ammo (we shoot what we are made to carry). First thing I suspected were magazines. Jams usually 4-5th round out of any magazine, including my Glock 22 duty mags. Took apart and thoroughly cleaned it, can't see anything wrong, lubed it, function tested it....same problem. Upon examination, feed ramp is same symmetry (sp?) as my Glock 22....nothing amiss there.

Sent an email to other guys in my outfit inquiring if others had this problem, sure enough, several others are replying this is happening to them too. Some more than others. Called Glock, they wanted to know if we had the "latest updated magazines". Checked them out, and in fact we do.  Local armorers are stumped.

Glock wants them returned for repair/replacement, but shipping these things overnight UPS or Fed Ex is horrendous.  These are personally owned guns so the outfit won't pay for it.   Anyone encountered this problem and if so, what the heck is wrong?    Any other shipping alternatives I'm missing here?

 :(

Rogue,
First thing that would be suspect is the mag. Seems you have pretty well eliminated that. Short cycling could be the culprit. This occurs when the slide slows down too much as it nears the end of it's rearward travel, causing the top round in the magazine to feed in a straight line into the feed ramp. I assume you are using the stock recoil spring/guide rod assembly, so that's most likely not the problem. Another thing that can cause this problem is lack of lubrication. I know all the armorers will squeal, but I use a light synthetic grease on the rails of my Glocks with great success. I'm guessing that your 27 is your qualified backup, so I'd either find another brand of ammo that would work or retire the gun till you can sort out the problem. Good luck, let us know when you find the problem.

Maybe the pistol is short cycling; and, maybe, some high tech lube will solve the problem.  Don't forget to lube the trigger mechanism points - especially that flat disconnector piece that rides under the slide.  (See the owner's manual.)  If it were my pistol:  I'd first change the recoil spring; then, just to be sure I'd, also, change the extractor claw.

The final thing I'd look at is the angle of the top most coil on the magazine springs.  There should be a steep upward angle on them.  Hollow points in a Glock are always tough.  Keep the barrel lockup area nice and clean.  Use a little 4/0 emery paper WITH oil on the feed ramp, too.

By the way, feed ramp symmetry isn't the whole answer; the design and configuration of the locking lugs is, at least, as much of a concern - especially on a G-27.  Two years might be time for some new Wolff magazine springs.  Some of this problem may be due to reduced pressure on the up and coming 4 or 5th round due to spring fatigue.  ;)

Thanks guys!   I lubed it, still does it. Thinking it might well be the mag springs but I have several new ones and it still does it.  Probably go to Glock this week. I'll let you know.  The other guy in the office shot 200+ rounds thru his today, and not a bobble  :?  So, who knows.

I'll update back in a couple weeks!

Sorry to hear about your 27 jamming.  Mone has never bobbled once.  Reliability is the hallmark of Glock pistols.  I would send it back to Glock for repair.  I heard that they are very good at standing behind their product.  Good luck

Sorry I haven't posted back. I had some pressing things come up, including getting realllllly sick, and haven't shipped it off yet. I'll do so soon and advise what they come up with.  Other guy in the office has had his quit jamming after cleaning and seriously lubing it.
