NRA National Air Rifle Silhouette Championship
« on: August 22, 2005, 04:51:24 AM »
As far as I know there has not been a NRA National Air Rifle Silhouette Championship for may be 20 years. We now have an opportunity (if the NRA agree) to have one at the best Championship venue I know in the USA. Winnsboro Gun Club, Winnsboro. Louisiana. There is no doubt that they will run the event as well as they run the Southern Nationals, (The Best event I have attended). What impressed me most is that David McLemore and his team are totally dedicated to making the Southern Nationals not only the best competition every year, but each year better than the last. I know that lots of you on this forum have attended the southern Nationals many more time than I. So now it’s our turn to give a little back to David and his team and add support to his request to run the NRA National Air Rifle Silhouette Championship. Please add your support to this forum tread and any suggestions you may have on how we can get our feelings back to the NRA.

I would like to suggest we send our letters asking for an Air Rifle Silhouette Nationals to Mr. Gil Gilchrist the Director of Competitive Shooting Division who is also Greg Connor’s Boss.

If we could persuade Mr. Gil Gilchrist that the matches would draw a decent attendance of around 100 competitors for each of the matches.  I don't see a reason why he would not grant us a National air rifle Silhouette match after all we already had two air rifle matches back in the mid 1980’s.

If we go any other route it may take four or five years more like it did Cowboy Sil Rifle after we began to have the matches sanctioned by the NRA because they wanted to see a good attendance at the Cowboy Regional Championships held in Raton for a few years before hosting National Cowboy Championships.

For your information this year the handgun and rifle National Championships excluding Black Powder Cartridge and Cowboy Silhouette Rifle had one of the worst attendance records in the history of the sport.  Cowboy rifle had around 150 shooters for each of their three matches an improvement of almost 40 shooters from last years Cowboy Nationals.

Hi Tony
I don't know if you go to The southern Nationals @ Winnsboro, but i think there was over 200 shooters small bore. David's posts seem to have disapeard but he will have the totals. this year i am sure we were very close to 100 shooting air rifle all glasses.

Tony is right on the mark regarding the way to go about requesting an NRA Air Rifle Nationals.  As far as the numbers this year, we had 191 competitors at the Southern Nationals.  The Louisiana Air Rifle matches ran from 50+ competitors to 90+ competitors depending on the rifle being shot.  Many shooters that were new to the sport of air rifle silhouette competed and will be back next year.

Winnsboro Gun Club is submitting a bid for the 2006 NRA Air Rifle Silhouette Championship this week.  The NRA Rules Committee will meet in October.  This will give us plenty of time to get support from the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism for the Air Rifle championship.  If we are unsuccessful, we will host another Louisiana Championship.

Ok so I was close with the numbers. Any way lets get the letters off to Mr. Gil Gilchrist at the NRA. Just a small thing we can do compared to all the hard work the team at Winnsboro do.
