Beginner needs help choosing 1st bow!
« on: August 23, 2005, 07:25:14 PM »
I need some help!  I'd like to get a compound bow for hunting both whitetail and mule deer as well as antelope.  The archery seasons are much longer here than the regular firearms seasons.  I've been looking at this http://www.huntersfriend.com/2005-Hoyt-Grizzly/reflex-grizzly-bow-package.htm   I don't want to spend more than $600 for the whole set-up including arrows.  Please keep that in mind when making your suggestions.  I plan on using a release, shooting with sights and want to use a fixed broadhead, other than that, I'm pretty much open to any suggestions.  So help me pick out a bow! :D

my suggestion is one of these:

http://www.renegadebows.com/

but regardless...go try out alot and single cam is the way to go if you can.  i dont have a single cam as they weren't out when i bought my current bow (which i just cant seem to give up).  but ive shot alot of them.  they require much less fiddling and adjusting, they shoot fast and quiet..(most do).

try out longer axel-axel lengths.  its easier to get good with them.

Regardless of the make of bow you buy make sure:
1. Brace height of at least 7 inches (higher the better, more forgiving)
2. Positive draw stop
3. At least 75% let off
4. SINGLE CAM
5. Loop nock if you shoot a release.

Thanks for the responses so far!  What's involved with tuning a bow?  Does it need to be done frequently?  I went to Cabela's last night and shot a few bows.  It was kind of a waste though, I didn't really know what to look for.  The salesman wasn't really all that helpful.  Most of the "tips" he gave me were the exact opposite of what I've read and heard before.  As for the bows that I did shoot, I didn't notice any major differences between them.  Like I said earlier, I didn't know what to look for.  I did shoot one of their least expensive bows and noticed it was louder and seemed to vibrate an awful lot.  Anyway, thanks for the help.  I'm looking forward to any other suggestions you guys might have! :D

best advice i can give is...visit a mom n pop type of archery proshop if you have one near by...they will outfit you as properly as they want you to be back.  they are nicer and more knowledgeable to deal with and unfortunately hungrier for business.
