75mm rifled barrels..cheap
« on: August 24, 2005, 06:05:24 AM »
Hey, I was just looking at a Sportsmans Guide catalog and my eye picked up on the recoilless rifle tubes. The ad says they are demil sections about 4 to 4 1/2 feet long. The photo is pretty small but looks like they burned them off just in front of the breech swell. List price is 99 bucks.

Just wondering if they might make good liners for a ML cannon. They are 75mm, rifled with a twist of 1-25????? That would have to be feet, not inches, right?

Any comments or ideas?

$99?  Wow that's cheap. Might make a good liner with some work.

I'd have to do the math but it might work for a breech loader like the Whitworth.

Wow, that is an interesting item.  Couldn't find it in any of the S.G. catalogs that I have though.  I am wondering just how much breech pressure these bbls could stand.  From my old Army Ordnance days, of about 50 years ago, I seem to recall that most of the pressure was vented out the rear end of the recoilless rifles, thru the venturi so most of the recoil was not felt.  The use of this bbl as a Whitworth does really sound interesting but with the above in mind, could it be used for any more than just as a liner???  I checked it out "on line" as John N suggested and note that there was no indication of what this bbl weighs but if S.G. charges shipping costs according to value of the item, it would only amount to around $12.99.
Is this correct?? Blaster (Bob in So.CO)

John;

Thanks for putting the link up, I spaced it out on the original post.

Bob;

Yes, they do squirt one heck of a lot of gas out the back. Mr Newton says it's not just a good idea, it's the law.

This is a down and dirty about the original gun that I found.

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL DATA  75 MM RECOILLESS RIFLE, M20

                       Length..................6 ft. 10 in.
                       Weight..................114.5 lbs.
                       Rifling.................Uniform, right hand, 1 turn in 25
                       Breech..................Interrupted screw
                       Range...................7000 yards (HEAT round)
                       Muzzle Velocity.........1000 ft./sec. (HEAT round)
                       Projectile Weight.......3.19 lbs. (HEAT, shaped charge)
                       Armor penetration.......4 inches

Perhaps I'll put in a call to S.G. and ask about any not so obvious demil cuts in the tubes, like a full length longitudinal cut.

Seems like it would take a fair amount of pressure to achieve the ballistics listed above.
