« on: August 26, 2005, 10:41:55 AM »
I just cast about 50 405 gr. hollow base 45/70 bullets from Lee. Wow - that's a hunk of lead.     Does anyone have any good loads for this bullet since it isn't gas checked. I plan to use it in my B.C.. Thanks

As much Fg black powder as you can get into the case under the bullet. That's what it was made for, after all.

13 grains of Unigue. 27 grains of 5744. 30 grains of either of the 4198s.  I leave the bullets as cast and either use Liquid Alox or pan lube them.

No duplex suggested. Those are separate loads.

I've had best results with 24 - 25 gr 2400 sized in a Lee sizer, seated to the first driving band, hand lubed with good quality machine grease, then seated to finished depth and wiped clean. I use Canadian Tire moly grease, but the differences are small.

I use 43 gr of RX7 with the LEE 405 grhp. The hp is just for looks, more like a dimple. This load was recommended to me by the old Hercules pwdr co many years ago. It has killed our deer for many years now. POWDERMAN.  :D  :D

I've been working with the 405 grain lee hollow point and have settled on 36 grains 3031, that little kadahin barrel really loves them with that load at least in my set up and me shooting it its good fro 150 yards, but don't think Iwant to shoot a deer that far just yet , but it sure is fun, only problem I have now is my lee production pot just took a dump, even ater replacing the heating element and thermistate it will not stay hot or melt any lead, just going to have to get me a new one, good thing I still have me a 200 bullets acsted, and 100 rounds loaded up.  bb75

Is this the Lee .459-405-HB bullet?

What load did you want?

A smokeless load or a black powder cartridge load?

I suspect since you didn't specify that you want a smokeless load.  I no longer use Unique powder for any 45-70 loadings.  Unique powder is position sensitive.  Accurate Arms 5744 powder however is not, and works I feel much better.

Basicly you can use any loadings found for the 45-70 by looking at these following sites:

Accurate Arms

MD Smiths reloading pages for the 45-70 cartridge

Hodgden 45-70 loadings

CAUTION - Do not accept anyones reloading data that is given on a forum board unless you see that load given in one of the on-line reloading manuals.
