ok guys got a problem and need your help with my Omega.

I am elk hunting in two weeks in colorado. Remember, due to Colorado law I cannot use pellets or sabots. I want to use Powerbelts and APP (American Pioneer Powder).

I tried a 295 grain powerbelt this afternoon with 80, 90, 100, and 110 grains and couldn't get any to shoot worth a crap.

Does anybody have a good elk load using APP and Powerbelts thru an Omega?

I was shooting pyrodex 150 grains with 295 grain Powerbelt, and had it sighted in, but was getting the infamous crud ring. Thus I decided to switch to APP. No crud ring now, but am not having any luck shooting consistently.

With 295 Power Belts, I could not go over 100 grains in my Omega without getting flyers. This was with Pyrodex Select. :?

elkstalkr, were you getting good accuracy with the 150 gr. of pyrodex and with 295 grain Powerbelt? If you were and got a crud ring, have you considered the 25 ACP conversion breach plug?

My Omega shoots 295gr. Powerbelts just fine with 90gr. of Black Mag'3. I also got good results with 90gr. Pyrodex. I did not get a real crud ring like with 777 but did get a lot of fouling. Possibly you could try the new Remington Kleenbore primers with Pyrodex if it was shooting well in your rifle. (cheaper and easier than making the switch to the .25ACP). I have made the switch and love the .25 conversion but not sure you have time to mess with that at this point. I also would suggest you try heavier Powerbelts as they shot well in my Omega also.

I got my elk load, but it isn't exactly what I wanted.

I could not get the APP to shoot worth a damn! I purchased some 348 grain PB's, and tried 90 and 100 grain APP loads. They were both all over the place.

Finally just switched back to my regular pyrodex. Shooting 90 grains of powder with a 348 grain PB, had a 3 inch group at 100 yards and called it good. I am still getting the crud ring, but only about half as bad. Reducing the load and switching to Remington kleanbores helped, I now have to swab only every other shot as opposed to every round.

One other thought. I was using 2F APP, this stuff looks about like salt rock compared to the 2F Pyrodex I have been shooting. I am thinking this may have something to do with my APP shooting problems. What do ya'll think?

Hi Elk

It's just tough getting Omegas to shoot PB's and Conical when they were designed for plastic sabots/shallow lands and grooves. Thats why most folks have to shoot the heavier/longer 348/405 PB's so the rifling gets a better bite to spin it good.

And thats why almost all CVA's shoot PB's so well, like your 45cal--deep lands and grooves and a tighter bore.

That said, you know I've been using APP FFFg for over 4 years and swear by it. It really does make a BIG difference! (It is really just equivalent to most other powder makers FFg size granules.)

Also APP only needs moderate compression when loading to perform well. I never super compress to the point of bouncing a ramrod :shock:

BTW, I got a great spot to target practice in a sand/clay pit (Private Land) so when ya get back from Elk hunting, I could take ya there to work out all the kinks in that Omega. I've shot from 0900 till 1700 some days and just loved the privacy and it's super safe :-)
