45/70 recoil?

Here is some data from www.chuckhawks.com

A 8.5 lb 7mm Rem. Mag. rifle shooting a factory 150 grain bullet would give you 19.2 lbs of recoil energy.

A 7.0 lb 45-70 rifle shooting a factory 300 grain bullet would give you 23.9 lbs of recoil energy.

If these two rifles were the same exact weight, my guess is you would have about the same amount of recoil with factory loads (150 & 300 grain).  However, when you change to hot handloads, the recoil of the 45-70 would quickly out-recoil the 7 mag.

Don't drag me into your tit-for-tat spat. In fact, why don't you two take it to PMs, you're screwing up the thread.

Excellent advice Ian.

While it does appear a pissing contest has developed here between you two guys to this point I don't really see where either of you have broken any GBO rules at least not yet. Arguing as long as done within the rules is OK. Neither of you are going to change the other's mind I'm quite sure.

My opinion of the .45-70:

It can be a pussy cat. Or it can be a bear. Loaded to the old BP levels of performance in most rifles (never shot it in a handi) it's quite pleasant to shoot. Loaded to the level Buffalo Bore loads to it is punishing in every thing I've shot it in to include a 13 pound Browning BPCR. In a Marlin Cowboy I fired about six of them and called calf rope. Couldn't take any more.

So in my personal experience it matters greatly what rifle we're talking about and even more what load. Three hundred grain bullets seldom seem to hurt. Four hundred grainers at old BP level don't either. Push the 350s and over to max levels in loading manuals and it hurts me regardless of the rifle.

So continue to discuss but make sure you do so within the rules. No personal attacks and no name calling. Just stick to the facts as you see them and not to personalities. Or better still argue it via PMs.
