What's your 2005 Gun and Load?
« on: August 26, 2005, 05:59:24 PM »
I'm getting pumped up and ready for another South Carolina Western Piedmont and Florida pine flatland riverine floodplain deer season. I am warming up the following:

For deer: .270 Winchester Classic Featherweight w/3X9 Bausch & Lomb scope and 150 gr. Nosler Partition over 54.2 gr. of IMR 4831 powder.

For Hogs: Ruger 77K/22RP w/4X Weaver scope and Federal .22LR 36 gr. copper plated hollow points

For ducks: 12 ga. Winchester Model 1300 pump and Winchester Drylock 3" Mag. 1.25 oz. #4 steel shot

For Turkey: Either the .22LR or the .270 Win. whichever is in hand. Yea, the .270 is too much gun, but when the Florida seasons run concurrently, I'm gunning for BIG game (deer/hogs) and should a bird make an entrance, I'll try for a clean neck shot. Maybe I take the shot, maybe I don't. Depends on the bird's range and presentation.

I hope your pre-season is proceeding as high-voltage as mine.  My arsenal may not be as large as some, but I am particularly happy with those pieces in mine.  Plus, I'm having difficulty sleeping already in anticipation of this season (like all past seasons).

In New York State we have two zones, a "northern zone" were you can use a rifle, shotgun, handgun, bow or a muzzle loader and a "southern zone" were in most places you can't use a rifle, just a shotgun, handgun, bow or a muzzle loader for deer or black bear.

In the "northern zone" most of the time I use my Marlin 336CS in 35 Rem. It has a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm Shotgun Scope on it. I shoot factory Remington 200 gr. Core-Lokt ammo in it. This is my woods/brush gun, if my shots are going to be under 100 yards (which is most of the time) this is my go to rifle. I also have and use a Winchester model 88 in 308 Win. and a Remington model 700 in 280 Rem. but most of the time its the turdy-fibe!

In the "southern zone" I use my Remington 870 Express 12 ga. with a 23 inch fully rifle barrel with the cantilever scope mount. I have a Bushnell scope on it now. I'm going to put the same scope on it that I have on my Marlin rifle mentioned above. I'm going to use either Remington's Premier Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded Sabot Slugs or Winchester's Partition Gold Slugs. I'll use which ever shoots the best.

It's kind of fun seeing what all the posters on this BB shoot. Some nice collections of firearms, to be sure.

I keep thinking I'm going to hunt with another rifle, but when it comes right down to it I am sure I will pull out my favorite... a 1952 M70 in .300 Weatherby Magnum with a 2.5-10x Swarovski scope with an illuminated reticle. I just love this rifle. It has a customer Manzanita stock that fits me to a tee. I'll shoot 180 grain or probably 200 grain loads. For larger game I'll use 220 grain loads but I don't think there is anything larger than deer in my sights this season.

For pheasant I'll use my Benelli MkII 12 gauge.

Not by any means certain I'll even be able to hunt locally this year. Lost my long standing place on private land to a horse pasture. The public land around here is pretty much too steep and tough for me at this time with the shortness of breath issues I'm having.

But when I'm out and about if I manage it I'll likely again use my R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle in 7-08 and a handgun in either .44 Magnum or .45 Colt.

1964-1965 (not sure which year) Winchester Model 70 Featherweight .270, using Winchester 140 gr. Accubond loads...got a decent 8 pointer with it yesterday morning  8)

For close shots or hunting timber...Marlin 336 in 30-30; tried Federal's new "Fusion" loads and got great accuracy...haven't shot a deer with it yet...we'll see how it performs.

For hogs...Marlin 1894PG in .44 mag.

This year my primary gun will be my Sendero in 25-06AI. It shoots the
125 Gr. Wildcat ULD with a stiff charge of RL25 at 3,250FPS. With a BC that matches the 200 GR. 30cal MK, it is very lethal & bucks the wind.

My thicket rifle will be a 450 Marlin H&R Ultra that I traded for. No advantage over a hot 45-70, I just traded cheap. I hunt an area a little
in the Ozarks that has Bear, Deer & Hogs on the same ridge & this gun is
perfect for that.

Started off this year with a NEF Handi superlight 243 with a Nikon 4x32 fixed powered scope. The 243 was loaded with either Winchester 95 grain Ballistic silver tips or Horandy 100 grain light mags BTSP.  Now I am using NEF Handi Survivor 308 w/Nikon scope, loaded with either Winchester 150 grain Ballistic silver tips or Fusion 150 grain load.  I also carry a Taurus Tracker 357 mag, loaded with PMC 158 grain JSP.  I have taking two deer with the 243, now I want to break in the 308.  Also more than likely will handgun hunt with the 357 mag in real thick woods (no shots will be over 30 yards).
Everyone has a game plan, until they get punched in the mouth.

For deer gun season which starts Monday by the way, I'm going to use a 6.5" .41mag. Blackhawk.  210gdhp, 19gr. 2400, CCI 300 primer in Winchester Nickel cases.
If I don't get both deer then, for muzzleloader season it's a stainless NEF Huntsman with a 4x simmons pro-diamond.  240 xtp sabots, and 80gr.Triple7.
