Browning BAR 30-06 Accuracy out to 300 yds
« on: August 29, 2005, 03:20:00 AM »
I hear a lot of people say I use my BAR in thick woods for close range hunting and use a bolt gun for long range. My Browning BAR shoots 1/2" to 1" groups at 100 yds. I have never shot it at 200 - 300 yds. My question is are the BAR's accurate out to 300 yds or are the bolt guns that much more accurate at these ranges ???

I don't know the life expentcy but I have been shooting a Bar lightweight with wood stock 20" bbl for around 10 yrs and it is one great rifle my 06 shoots like yours with factory loads.
I have shot mine at gallon milk jugs of water to 350 yards and had no problem hitting them with one shot only. I have also killed a few deer at 300 yds more or less with mine ,all one shot kills. Friends of mine who also shoot Bars have had similar results and have killed game much farther than me with their 25-06 and .270's One fellow took his .338 to Alaska and got a moose and brown bear with it under very adverse conditions. My only gripe is they are heavy and a little clumsey for me to get into action fast. But the weight helps, as they really hold well for off hand shots.

lakel, I had a bar safari in 338 win .mag topped with a leupold 2x7 vari-x ll that rifle grouped 1 1/2 " at 240 yards . No lie  i sold it to my nephew as he fell in love with it and although it never jammed on me i always feared it would when i needed it the most , it was a great rifle . When it comes to semi-autos i always reccommend the Browning BAR

Belgium BAR, in 30-06

My brother bought a Belgium made BAR, in .30-06 Sprg, back around
1980, I think.  It was new, and he shot it a ton.  He handloaded, and
did a bunch of load development with it, and hunted it from Wisconsin
to Nevada.  He passed away last summer, and my younger brother
ended up with it.  The gun shows plenty of wear, but it still cycles
very reliably, and is still 1 MOA accurate with it's favorite loads.
I am thinking that unless one shoots 1000 rounds a year through
one, a BAR should last at least one life time, and maybe a couple
more.

I know that my BAR LW Stalker, in .308 Win, will not be sold by me,
and likely will not be worn out by me, either.
