DEX-COOL Antifreeze????
« on: August 29, 2005, 07:39:41 AM »
My '97 PU requires DEX-COOL antrfreeze.  I'm wondering if this expensive mixture has a generic substitute?  The owner's manual states that this mixture, DEX-COOL, is silicate-free.

Wonder if Walmart Whizz-Bang antifreeze is silicate free? Don't see anything listed under the contants.   Not necessarily Walmart but any of the other over-the-counter antifreeze is acceptable.??? Your experience?   Thank you.

If your truck is a 97 chevrolet the BEST thing you can do is to flush the red fake antifreeze out and replace it with the real stuff. You would be lucky if your heatercore and intake gaskets will last 120k with the red crap. But you must get it all flushed out before switiching to the green.

deejee. been working with dealerships and parts chains for a while now , the best advice i can give you is to ditch the dex cool and opt out for maybe a universal antifreeze, which can be bought at just about any parts chain .the dealerships are using oreilly or car quest universal formula and is compatible with ant shape, color ,smell and flavor of coolant out there and will help your engine run for many miles ahead.

Dexcool is good stuff IF you maintain the level properly, most problems occur when owners let the level get low enough to allow air in the system.  Best advice is to keep the level in the reservoir at the hot mark when it's cold using a 50/50 mix of Dexcool and distilled water. I used to have access to GM's Techlink, but they've changed the system and now requires a login, so I don't have the GM version of the info at the site below.

Quote
1. Keep the cooling system filled. In fact, fill the reservoir bottle to “Hot” level when the system is cold. Problems arise when a system’s coolant level is not maintained. (Fleet vehicles receiving regular maintenance, and with reservoirs kept slightly above normal, do not show signs of contamination. This even applies to the specific “problem” vehicles.)

With air in the system, it allows oxidation which leads to the contamination from what I've read at the GM techlink. Replacing the colling system cap on a regular basis is a good idea since it's the main source for coolant leaks.

This is interesting, I just got a letter from GM advising me that it is time to change out the DEX-COOL in my 2001 Tahoe.

So you guys are saying regular green PRESTONE is better. If so, why?
