reloading winchester universal shells
« on: August 30, 2005, 01:00:55 PM »
I have been shooting a lot of winchester universal shells. I cut them open and as far as i can tell they are the same as winchester AA shells when I went to the winchester site they tell me they are not the same and not to use the same data as AA. Has anyone reloaded them or have any info.  about them.
 Thanks Mike

Mike,

Check with the powder manufacturers if you are going to load the Universals. I'd recommend dumping the Win Universals and going with AA hulls. The AAs load well and last a number or reloads and plenty o' reload data to pick from. Generally you can pick up AA hulls by the bucket  for free after a trap shoot. I stopped picking up AAs at my club since I was running out of room to store them at home.

Use the data for 12-Gauge, 2 3/4 -in. Win. Polyformed with Plastic Wad  at Alliaint. I found after years of reloading shot shells -you don't have to be as presise as you do with rifle /pistol rounds as far as componets go.

The plastic in these hulls is not as durable as AA's, Remington Unibody or Premier/Nitro or Federal hulls. I have loaded a few of these in the past and it is a lesson in frustration with occasional crushed/wrinkled shells. I have loaded on several different reloaders (MEC, Pacific, Lyman) and the same results occured on each. Maybe your mileage will differ. Load a few and let us know how they work for you...

Best Regards!
