I feel like i been asleep??? "new prices on 1911a1's??
« on: August 30, 2005, 02:14:53 PM »
I got the NRA rifleman collectable book on the 1911 today and it has prices that are outragious to me. A new 1911a1 runs between $500+ to $1,500 and more if you want a race version 45acp.  Even the colt 1911a1 is around  $800 to $1,200.  I can't believe the prices on them.  I feel like i have been asleep for 25 years. Stupid me now I realize why the used stuff is so high. Even the RIA and the Charles Daly aren't so cheap either. I found better prices on an Auto-Ordnance Army WW2 1911a1($384) and an SA WW2  "45" on the grips($419)  brand new.  I read the S.A.M. 45acp is around $300 on the net but i never see them at my local dealers.  I guess right now the Auto-Ordnance Army is the best bang for our buck on the new 1911a1 market.  What do you guys think?

BTW:  Sorry i never cruise by the counters of new handguns that often i never look at the colts at all. I'm just too frugal.

The RIA sells for $300-$350 around here and I can't find much bad said about them. I have two of the SA GI spec. and except for the sights both are great pistols (IMHO). I can't spend the big bucks for a name either. Both my SA's function very well with factory ammo.

BigBill - yep, you're right - unfortunately.  Prices are sky-high, even for the lesser quality guns.  One of the unseen affects of 1911 was an increased demand for personal protection firearms and the attendant increase in prices.  I consider myself fortunate to have purchased my SA 45 when I did but even so, the last Colt Gold Cup I owned (Series 70) purchsed in the late 80s, ran me $600.  I wouldn't buy another Colt today.

The great thing about a used 1911, even a Colt, is that the platform can be used to build almost anything you can imagine.  If the frame is solid, then you have the basis for any number of concepts.  But sadly, you are correct about the prices of the newer guns.

And ya know, I have a lot more fun cruisin' the 'old gun' cabinets than I do lookin' at all the new stuff on the shelves.  But, I guess that's onna dem things what makes us 'ol farts' - LOLOLOL.  Mikey.

I've noticed it too. There has been drastic inflation with guns (and just about everything else I buy) despite the relatively low inflation statistics.  Food, fuel, guns, fishing tackle, it's all gone up drastically in the past five years.  I'm glad I got my stuff when I did.  It looks like we've undergone a period of undocumented double-digit inflation.

if you factor in inflation that gold cup is probably cheaper today then it was at 800 bucks in the 80s

Lloyd - you are probably right.  But even so, that much $ today is more than I would care to spend or could spend, all at once, for another 1911.  Mikey.

Some factors you failed to mention with inflation is "health benefits" and cost of raw materials.  The "benefits" package for employees is getting more and more expensive!  The company I work for now places a 40% of pay average on the cost of additinal benefits, hence someone earning $15 per hour has a $21 per hour impact on the company's finances.  These all get passed back to us...the consumers.  Additionally, the cost of steel has skyrocketed thanks to the grow of industry in China (a major contributor).  My company generates scrap metal from the production of our consumer goods.  We sell the scrap metal and have historical budgeted "income" from this sale.  The first quarter of this year, we had a $300,000 surplus in the sale of our scrap metal.......that's $300,000 over our expectations.  Kinda give you an idea of the rise in metal costs.

Regarding choices, you won't go wrong with the SA Mil Spec models.  I shot two for many years before finally going back to Colt's.  My Colt Government and Commander 1991 models are excellent firearms.  The Government model displaced a S&W SW1911 as my primary USPSA/IPSC competition gun.  Out-of-the-box accuracy was great!  If you go to budsgunshop.com, you will find some of the best prices available on firearms.  They are selling the Colt 1991 models for $623 (blue models).

The used market is always good.  1911's are pretty hard to destroy from shooting.  Majority of the problems I've noted are from home gunsmiths.

Good luck and enjoy!
