great forum
« on: August 30, 2005, 07:03:59 PM »
I'd just like to take a min to let everyone know how much I appreciate this forum.  I had a heck of a time finding any useful info on H&R rifles, but thanks to ya'll I've decided to treat myself to a new 24" hb .223--I think it'll serve its purpose just as well as the savage I priced at several hundred dollars more.

Not to waste any more of your time, but hopefully ya'll won't mind me giving a bit of background.

My dad passed away a couple months ago.  While he was real sick, one of the last things he ever told me was that I was shooting great and to keep improving.  So, I've been looking for something a bit larger than my .22 LR but smaller than the 30-30 and .270 that I just inherited.  I've priced the .223 for $243, a bushnell 4-12x40 scope for $70, and a harris bipod for $40, for a grand total of about $380 after tax.  That all seems fair, right?
When the whole world is crashing down around me, atleast I'll have my SKS.

Welcome aboard!! Sorry to hear about your Dad, such a loss at your young age can't be easy.

The prices sound like you got yourself a pretty good buy and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Welcome!  Very sad to here about your dad.  From what little you said he sounded like a good guy.

The Bushnell scope you mentioned sounds like the Sportsman series found at Wal Mart.  They sell a 4-12X40 for $69.99.  I have one on a .30-06 Ultra Comp and like it very much.  It's very clear and I've not had problem with it holding a zero.  I also like the Adjustable Objective lens.  As a matter of fact, I'm fixin to buy another for my .223 HB Handi.

Have a great day!

I didn't see you post until after I posted.  That's a good deal on the Simmons.  Thanks for the info.

thanks, ya'll.  It's nice to feel welcome.

I'm the type of person who loves to tinker, and it's nice to see tutorials on how to improve the consistency of the H&R rifles.  I'm an engineering student, and i'm more of the gear-head type than the book-smart one.

I'm really looking forward to sending some rounds downrange with this rifle.

Welcome!
Very sorry about your dad.  Mine is slowly dying of cancer.  If you smoke STOP!  Sounded like a good man to be concerned and proud of you at his very end.  That says a lot.  I have no doubt he passed those traits on as well.

I love the way my 223 UV shoots.  Be sure to follow the barrel prep and keep the chamber clean and the brass clean.  Should get no stuck cases then.

Try the Win whitebox ammo for about $14 for a box of 40.  These rifles LOVE that ammo and will serve well to break it in.  If you reload you can sometimes do better.  Some have not, mine likes my 40gr Vmax load.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Wow, thanks.  I hadn't even thought about a break-in procedure yet.  I've never owned a new rifle before.

Sorry to hear about your dad, Handirifle.  Mine was sick with lung cancer for a year and a half before he finally passed.  He was 47, would have been 48 last month.

Welcome and I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Lung cancer is a tough thing to see anyone go through, I lost my mother 4 months ago to lung cancer. I feel your pain also. Remember the good memories as they with give you strenght and help your healing.  I have a .223 ultra handi rifle and she shoots pretty good.

Peace and Light
